Hi, I am looking for the parents and or siblings of my great great grandfather Andrew Peterson born 6 April 1849, Fredrikstad, Østfold, Norway. He arrived in the USA in May 1874 in Portland, Maine.
Thank You |

Yes, this is a start. In the 1880 USA census he was a sail maker in Portland, Maine. |

Oh - now I see this was included in jkmarler post.
1875 census in the town of Fredrikstad Address: 167 Brogade Andreas Pettersen born 1800 Anne Helene Andreasdatter b 1807 Petrine Pettersen f 1835 Sophie Emilie Pettersen b 1838 or 1837 (transcriber couldn't read) Hans Hendrik Pettersen b 1845 Petter Adolf Pettersen b 1846 Gustav Pettersen b 1852 http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01052006004192
Petter is listed but not living here - he's a seaman. The 1865 census gives the kids the patronymic name Andreassen based on their father's FIRST name Andreas, but the family has switched or did switch to the "modern" style of using the father's LAST name, Pettersen. A normal cultural pattern. |

A possible birth for Anne Helene Andreasdatter, 19 March 1807 in Glemmen, to Andreas Pethersen and Anne Maria Sorensdatter: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NHMF-T5H
MARRIAGE for the parents of Andrew Peterson (of Portland, Maine). Anne Hellene Andreasdatter, 24 years old in 1831, in Glemmen, to bachelor Andreas Hansen Link
CHILDREN of Andreas and Anne Hellene (returned with jkmarler adds of Marie and Peter).
Marie b Dec 1831
Peter b 08 Nov 1833
Petrine, born 27 March 1836 in Glemmen to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and Anne Helene Andreasdatter; think it says baptized at home and the baptism confirmed in church 19 June 1836 Link
Sophie Emilie, born 13 December 1838 in Glemmen, to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and wife Anne Helene Andreasdatter in --?-- Link
Hansine Andrea, born 28 May 1841 in Glemmen, to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and wife Anne Helene Andreasdatter in Forstaden. Link
Hans Henrik, born 16 October 1844 in Glemmen, to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and wife Anne Helene Andreasdatter Link
Peter Adolph born 08 Nov 1846 in Glemmen, to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and wife Anne Helene Andreasdatter in --?-- Link
Andreas birth, posted above by Kåre born 06 April 1849 in Glemmen to roerkarl Andreas Petersen and Anne Helene Andreasdatter Link
Gustav birth 04 April 1852 in Glemmen to roerkarl Andreas Hansen and wife Anne Helene Andreasdatter in --?-- Link
Back to say the place Glemmen refers to baptism at Glemmen church - to clarify it's not a reference to a more specific birthplace within the parish. |

It's rather peculiar that the father's name is undergoing a transformation in use also. For his marriage and most of the children's baptism he is listed as Hansen and for public records like census schedules he is listed as Pettersen.
This may be him in the 1801 census 1 year old son of Hans Pettersen in Fredrikstad: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058191001415
There is an Andreas Petersen b abt 1799 in Fredrikstad also in the 1801 census. I wonder if Hans has a second name as in Hans Petter Pettersen?
In the baptisms noted with a question in Jane's post as 'i ?" the place is Forstaden. |

Forstaden in Fredrikstad was the former name of the area that today is the southern part of Vestre (Western) Fredrikstad.

Helpful comments. One of the U.S. records for Andrew had a handwritten, hard-to-read birthplace. Pretty sure now, that it said "Forstaden."
In the 1885 census, Anne Helene Pettersen is noted as a widow. With her are daughters Petrine and Sophie Emilie: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01053251001827
Seven children are noted as surviving when the father Andreas died, Six children are listed so far, in this thread. |

Loudthinking Very strange and confusing. If the 1801 census has the right Andreas born in Forstaden, Fredrikstad, he was bapt. Andreas Hansen but changed lastname to his fathers lastname Pettersen when Andreas was born 1849 for reasons we do not know.
Both names can be correct. Do not be confused Kevin Andreas b. 1849 was acc. to the church books bapt. Andreas Andreasen (he was Andreas son) but lived his life as Andreas Pettersen.

There is quite a lot of detail in Andreas' dødfallsprotokol would someone read & report? |

Here is Anne Helene's dødfallsprotokol #63. I think it says she has a house and she's survived by 4: Source information: Østfold county, Fredrikstad by, Dødsfallsprotokoll 2 , 1882-1892, oppb: Statsarkivet i Oslo.
