Our family history says Ole Paulsen was a “weigh master” for the city of Oslo. He died at age 45 on 15 July 1863. His burial is recorded at the Trefoldighet Parish on 21 July 1863. Cause of death was listed as “nervefeber” (typhoid). Are there any suggestions on where to find information to confirm his being a “weigh master” for the city? The death record appears to contain the word “arbeider” (laborer).

Ole married Martha JANSEN (b.1821), they had three children John (b.1852) Fanny (b 1857) and Carl Martin (b.1860P) all born in Olso and recorded at the Oslo Domkirke |

It looks to me that he is "underveier". To see what laborer starts with see #93 on that page with Arb. abbreviation. |

Obviously I was in the wrong column (6th from left) seeing an "Arbblg" (sic). So how does "underveier" translate to English? Under roads? As in, "under the roads department?" |

My Norsk to Engelsk dictionary didn't have weigh master in it but says a weigher is veier. So I'd say a deputy weigher for underveier. But perhaps you should wait for the Norwegians on site to "weigh" in?
The Arbblg, etc. is under Opholsted, so its the address where he lived. |

A weight master was a municipal official who had as work to make sure it was operated with the right weights and measures in trade and commerce. In the larger cities there was obviously a need for more than one person, and we find also weight deputies.
He was living in "Arbblg." (Short for Arbeiderbolig) in Hammersborg when he died. |

I have a follow-up question on Ole Paulsen's employment status. When I reviewed his daughter Fanny Elvira Paulsen's 1872 confirmation record #23 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20051125010022.jpg I see what looks to be an "arb" proceeding his name. Do I assume correctly that this stands for "arbeider" or worker/laborer? In 1872 at that point in time, Ole would have been deceased for 9 years. I also see "arb" in front of #26, 28, 30, and 33. Also what is the abbreviation in front of Marthe Johansdatter on #23? |

Look up Fanny's baptism, he is probably listed as arb. there. It may have been copied from her baptism record. Sometimes but not always if a parent is deceased they are labelled that way. After all the record is supposed to be about the confirmand first.
The word abbreviated in front of Martha is hustru or housewife. The majority of women/ mothers are labelled that way on this page. |
