I wanted to find someone named Johan born in 1837, or 1838 in Larvik Vestfold with some connection to Dahl. Here is the only one I have found when looking through the parish records for Larvik in those years.

Name: Johan Theodor Antonsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 25 nov 1837
Baptism Date: 16 jan 1838
Baptism Place: , Larvik, Vestfold, Norway
Father: Anthon Singdahlsen
Mother: Maren Margrethe Horn
FHL Film Number: 127583

See number 8 left page

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7778&idx_id=7778&uid=ny&idx_side=-68

Here he is in the 1865 Census using the name Theodor Singdahlsen. Interesting his Occupation is listed as Contoirfuldmægtig, similar to that listed for Johan Dahls occupatio on Mahtildie's confirmaton.
He is married with one small child.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01038107004651

In 1875 Census wife Petra and son Anton seem to be living with another man. So he has either changed his name, divorced or what?

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01052139000224

He is still alive for birth of last child in 1875 Census See 119

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5921&idx_id=5921&uid=ny&idx_side=-45

END OF THE LINE

He died in 1874, see 103.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5922&idx_id=5922&uid=ny&idx_side=-100

Parts of Hedrum were absorbed into Larvik, so here is a long shot Johan Hansen on Bredal in Hedrum b 1837:

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01038123004977

Born on Bredal, too #25:
Source information: Vestfold county, Hedrum, Parish register (official) nr. 5 (1835-1848), Birth and baptism records 1837, page 27.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1241&idx_id=1241&uid=ny&idx_side=-31

A possible siting in 1900:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037151001477
Wedding info for the 1900 couple. Groom's fatheris the decease Hans Knudson:
Source information: Vestfold county, Hedrum, Parish register (official) nr. 7 (1857-1868), Marriage records 1868, page 264.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1244&idx_id=1244&uid=ny&idx_side=-276

The man in 1865 Hedrum's father is Hans Christensen so he is still on the table as a possible.

Does the seeker have copies of the originals of Mathilde's various USA records? Might be a clue there. If her father is named, a middle initial for him might be included, etc.

When Mathilde lands in New York, she says she's going to Madison, Minnesota (which is in Lac Qui Parle county) to a friend (?) Henry Rust / Rask or Broe / Bue. Could use another set of eyes to facilitate interpretation.

I read it as Henry Rush Broe or Broc or Brae 2? Aone, Looking at the other writing above this, it would appear to be a name Henry Rust followed by an address. And looking at some of the others it may be Box 2?

The closest I have been able to come to this name is in Pope County, Pope is not adjacent to Lac Qui Parle County but it is close. But he immigrated in 1870 as a child so how would he know her?

Gertrude Rutledge, in census after census gives her birthplace as Norway but her migration date as 1881 or even 1880. There are not that many people with last name Drolson (probably Drolsum after the farm in Modum.)

Using the NHDC website to search for Johan born 1836 to 1840 born in Laurvik or Laurvig or Larvik or Larvig for 1865 Census does not turn up a lot of candidates. Here they are. Most of them already surfaced by Jackie.

Johan Trulsen married one small child. living Larvik Langenstrand occupation Sømand, birth place Laurvik
In 1875 he is a patient in a Sømand Belegget paa Amt Sygehus

Johan Jacobsen married on small chid living Larvik Langenstrad occupation Smed, birh place Laurvik

Johan Oluf Thomasen married no children living in Larvik occupation Maskinarbeider birth place Laurvig Kjøbs.
Found in 1900 Census

Johan Sørensen unmarried living in Larvik Langenstrand occupation Skibsfører birth place Laurvik

Johan F Hansen married two children living Larvik Langenstrand occupation
Søemand birth place Laurvik

Died before 1875, posted by Jackie

Johan Thygesen unmarried living in Austre Moland birth place Laurvig
Likely found by Jackie in 1900 Census

In 1875 a new name (old to us) shows up
Johan Schulze Logerende occupaton Agent, born in Laurvik

If as Jane suggested we can obtain a middle initial it might just narrow things down to a man or two.
