...was born in Vestre Slidre July 28, 188. His parents were John Andersen and Ingeborg Knutsdaughter.April 6, 1906, he left Oslo for Iowa on the Salmo ship (agent: Elster). The ticket was paid already. He was an 18-year-old , unmarried worker. What is possible to find about him?

Trying to find him under Anders Sorengen, I do find this

Anders Sorengen
in the UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960
Name: Anders Sorengen
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birth Date: abt 1887
Departure Date: 4 Apr 1906
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Destination Port: New York, USA
Ship Name: Oceanic
Search Ship Database: Search for the Oceanic in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Master: Johan Cameron

Well I found him in the original manifest for the Oceanic arriving in New York on April 21, 1906. He is listed as Sorengen, Anders Johanesen age 19 from V Slidre and is going to Lake Mills, Iowa. An ureadable name is listed for person he is travelling to. Best guess is uncle a grauheim??

I have no idea how Ancestry.com has transcribed his name as I have been unable to identify a transcribed record for him.

Lake Worth,Iowa is in Winnebago County.

The FAG site for Deane Johnson shows a gravestone for her and probably her husband. Her husband birth year is listed as 1885 and his death as 1969. Hee is an Andrew Johnson that seems to fit that. However his birth date does not fit that listed for Anders Johnson from Vestre Slidre.

Andrew Johnson
in the U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014Name: Andrew Johnson
SSN: 479-28-1524
Last Residence:
56258 Marshall, Lyon, Minnesota, USA
BORN: 25 Feb 1888
Died: Aug 1969
State (Year) SSN issued: Iowa (Before 1951)

The Iowa marriage record for Dena Gertes and Andrew does not fit very well either with the data provided by Anne above. Here is the marriage record.

Andrew G Jahens
in the Iowa, Marriage Records, 1880-1937
Name: Andrew G Jahens
Birth Year: abt 1887
Gender: Male
Marriage Age: 26
Marriage Date: 8 Dec 1913
Marriage Place: Winnebago, Iowa, USA
Father: Johanna Jahens
Mother: Anna Kucklan
Spouse: Dena Gerdes

Hi Anne, yes it is fantastic help, help to search, and often more than one candidate must be researched before the answer is found. In this case the Andrew investigated by lyndal40 was well worth pursuing, BUT he is NOT your Andrew.

Lyndal40 has done the work necessary to rule this candidate out.

Have you noticed an important clue lyndal40 found? On the passenger manifest for your Anders traveling in 1906, says he is traveling to someone. The manifest is hard to read. Maybe it says "uncle -?-."

Perhaps you have a family tree that includes your Andrew. Maybe you already know who Andrew's uncles are. You can post the names of his uncles and tell which ones emigrated. Or you can look at the passenger manifest yourself to see what it says. It may be easier for you to read it, since you have an idea of the names it might say.

Anders' parents are John Andersen and Ingeborg/Ingebjørg Knutsdaughter. John Andersen's wife was Anne Johnsdaughter, and two of her brothers - Peder and Gunder Johnsen - emigrated with their wives via Bergen to Quebec and ended up in Minnestoa. Anders' mother was the oldest of all the brothers and sisters, and she had also a much younger sister, who also was baptized Anne. Even she with her husband left Norway via Bergen - and one her descendants is now living with his family in Hugo in Minnesota. HIS name is Lawrence Turner! This is what I can tell you so far!

Would you please say the same again but in more detail? Your Anders might be near these families.

The details I can give you now, are: Peder Johnsen Tuff w as born on May 27 in 1829 and baptized June 10 the same year. Confirmation took place July 28, 1844. His parents were John pedersen Fudske and Barbro Gundersdaughter. He married Marit Evensdaughter, Snortheim, in Røn Church in Slidre August 31, 1853. March 25, 1867, they left Norway. Marit Evensdaughter was born October 24, 1827 and baptized November 4, 1827. Confirmation: October 2, 1842. Pa rents: Even Evensen and Ingeborg Olsdaughter. Peder's brother was born July 7, 1843 and baptized July 16 the same year. Confirmation: May 29, 1859. His wife was Thora Pedersdaughter, who was born April 17, 1864. This couple emigrated also March 25, 1867. According to US Federal Census 1870, Gunder and Thora stayed in Winnebago, Iowa. Gunder died March 8, 1914. I have not been able to find the emigration protocols via Bergen to Quebec - but today's relatives have told me that Bergen and Quebec was their original plans. Peder and Gunder's youngest sister Anne was born April 24, 1848, and baptized June 1 the same year. Confirmation: June 28, 1863. She married Lars Alfsen Jarstad December 27, 1873, and they left Oslo May 8, 1874. (Emigrant-protocols 1871-1930).
