Not to worry Einar, I am sure that Karl Gustav born abt 1858 was born in Sweden. But sometimes it is still fun to explore where Jackie is going. Although I have spent some time exploring the records on Ancestry.com, both
Sweden, Church Records, 1500-1941 Sverige, kyrkböcker, 1500-1941
and
Sweden, Select Baptisms, 1611-1920
without finding Karl or Carl Gustav or Gustaf. However I did find records for the son Erik Oscar in both sets of records.
The Swedish records which are similar to those found in the parish records for Digitalarkivet read
Erik Oscar Sept 14 18 (1859, not 1861 as one of the Norwegian Census lists) (reads maybe) Kopperflageren? Carl Johan Bergqvist and his hustru Christina Johanna Sundgren from Levanger parish. Witnesses are Fribitann? Fredrik Johan Bergqvist and his hustru Anna Johanna Bergqvist, Followed by several other names some unreadable but two that are readabel are Alexander Lok and Johanna Didriksdatter.

It is more likely than not that Karl Gustave is the correct person but some of the details nag at me, the biggest of which is the sudden adoption of a hereditary surname merely because of a move to Sweden. Bergkvist /Bergquist is definitely a Swedish name, found only rarely on a Norwegian born person. If the Swedish parish register Anton found does characterize the parents as from Levanger Norway, that goes a way to relieve my anxiety. But the O.P. is happy with it all, no questions asked, so far be it for me to have any question. |

This information might be a little speculative but here is a Christina Johanna Bergqvist with a birth date close to what we would like to see (it does match the 1875 census).. The location is correct.
Christina Johanna Bergqvist in the Sweden, Select Baptisms, 1611-1920 Name: Christina Johanna Bergqvist Gender: Female Birth Date: 21 maj 1826 (21 May 1826) Baptism Date: 23 maj 1826 (23 May 1826) Baptism Place: Stora Kopparberg,Kopparberg,Sweden Mother: FHL Film Number: 221256
Kopparberg is the old county in Sweden (now called Dalarna) where Falun is located. It is famous for a large copper mine. It is also the area of Stora parish
In the parish records her mother is listed as Christina Bergqvist age 33. No father is listed. |
