A biography of Hans N. Hansen is included in the book, ILLUSTRATED ALBUM of BIOGRAPHIES of POPE AND STEVENS COUNTIES, MINNESOTA (Alden, Ogle, and Company, Chicago, 1888.) The biography of Hans Hansen is on p.304. A paragraph of biographical information about Hans is included in the biography of his son Johan Hansen on p.239. The book is in the public domain. It has been digitized is available for review online.

7. Children: The source of most of this information is the individual baptismal record. In the baptismal records for each of the eight children the father is listed as Hans Hansen or Hans N. Hansen. The mother is listed as Ingeborg Marie Andersdr.

Baptism date: 3 Jul 1852

Note: Johan emigrated to America in 1871. Johan is my great-grandfather. His son Herman is my grandfather.
ANDREAS HAGBERT (Baptismal record, FHL film number 123985)
Birth date: 14 Oct 1854
Baptism date: 25 Dec 1854
Baptism place: Kongsberg, Norway
Name variation: Hagebart on the baptismal record. Hagbart in all other documents.
Note: The 1865 census does not include this child as part of the family. It does include another male child born earlier in the year in 1865 and identified as Andreas Hagbart. This child is identified as Hagbart in the departure passenger list. In the Album biography of Hans and Ingeborg, the list of their children is an accurate chronological list of the eight children for whom there are baptismal records. The list includes includes two children named Andreas as child number three and child number seven. The biography then lists the children who have died (this was approximately 1887). The list is Nels, Andreas, and Helene. It appears that the first Andreas was born in1854 and died in childhood some time before 1865. A second male child was born in 1865 and was given the same name

HERMAN JULIUS (Baptismal record, FHL film number 278218)

Baptism date: 24 May 1868
Baptism place: Stromso section of Drammen, Buskerud, Norway
Note: The family apparently moved from Vestfold to the Stromso section of Drammen some time between June, 1865 and May, 1868. The history in the biography of four years as a merchant is consistent with 1867 or early 1868.

9. Work history: (source is the Album biography)
CLERK in a dry goods store. Approximately1843-46.
CARPENTER. Approximately 1847-58. Location was Kongsberg.
FOREMAN in an iron foundry. Approximately 1858-1868. I assume that the iron foundry is the Eidsfoss Iron Works. In the 1865 census the family is listed as living in the foremens housing, which I assume was in Eidsfoss.
SUPERVISOR of a tract of timber also during this time.
MERCHANT. Approximately 1868-1872. Location was the borough of Stromso of the city of Drammen.
10. Specific locations that the person lived: Hof in Vestfold county, Kongsberg in Buskerud county, Eidsfoss in Vestfold county, and the Stromso section of the city of Drammen in Buskerud county.
11 Emigration date: 1 May 1872. Hans emigrated with his wife and the five remaining children. Of their eight children, the first Andreas was deceased and Niels and Johan had emigrated to America in 1870 and 1871 respectively. Hans and the rest of the family departed from Oslo, traveled on the ship Ragnhild, and arrived in Quebec.
12. Emigrated to: Pope county, Minnesota. Hans and Ingeborg lived there for the rest of their lives.#8232;
13. Everything else I know about the individual: The biography states that family lost their mercantile business because of a fire. The fire may have been the impetus for the emigration to America. From the biography: In 1872 he came to the United States and stopped in Benson, Minnesota, after staying there a few days, he went to Chippewa Falls, Minnesota, and lived with his son, Nels, for one year, when he took a homestead in Pope county, Minnesota, on section 2, Rolling Fork township. There he remained for ten years, when he sold and bought a farm in Barsness township, on section 26, where he remained for four years. He then again sold out and bought a farm on section 14, Rolling Fork township, where he has since remained. Our subject is a representative man of his township. He has held the office of school director, and in political matters he usually affiliates with the democratic party, although to a large extent he is independent in his political views. Hans died on 3 Apr 1891 and was buried in Pope county in the Roilling Forks cemetery.
Please note that this family is listed twice in the 1865 census. One version is accurate, and the other version has many inaccuracies.#8232;
14. What I want to know:
My brother and his family are visiting Norway in August. Any information about sites that they could visit would be of great interest. This includes any immigration-related museums, the location of the places where the family lived and worked, and any burial sites of ancestors who did not emigrate. I am aware that part of the Eidsfoss Iron Works complex still stands and is a museum. I am also interested in knowing whether a detailed genealogical tree has been worked out for this family, and if so, by whom. We are interested in knowing whether there are living relatives in Norway that we could possibly contact and visit.
Also:
Identification of any birth record.
Identification of Hans baptismal record.
Information about his parents and family, including siblings.
The location of their home or farm.
The location of the homes of the family in Kongsberg, Eidsfoss, and Stromso.
The location of the mercantile business in Stromso.
The circumstances of the fire.
The location in Oslo from which they left for America.

Information about parents and family, including siblings... No simple answer. Would take going through possibly years and years of church records.
The location of their home or farm... Without name of farm and district no location.
Next two location requests - same limitation. No name - no location.
The circumstances of the fire... would not be recorded in church records - what source of such info would you be looking for that might survive?
The location in Oslo from which they left for America... Info available about the ship does not list a shipping line so how to guess where in Oslo it was docked? |

It would appear that the Sept 22, 1849 date is the corrrect one for the wedding. See number 12 bottom of the page in Digitalarkivet.

From this you know the parents names and the farms asssociated with them, which appear to be Eidsfoss and Lindseth. Although Eidfoss might not be a farm
Have you tried the Bydgebok associated with Hof to see if any thing is mentioned of either them or their parents. |

| Thank you for the information. "Wilmor" is Willmar, Minnesota. Willmar is in southwest Minnesota in Kandiyohi county. At the time that they were traveling the railroad line ended in Willmar. The recorded history of other members of my family is that they immigrated independently from Sweden, met in St. Paul, Minnesota, courted and got married. After their marriage they took the train to the end of the line in Willmar and then traveled by horse and wagon to their homestead in Pope county. Pope county was also the ultimate destination of the Hansen family. Eric |

Eric -- You can page backward and forward through the birth/baptismal records on those pages. Use the < and > buttons on the bar just above the image of the pages.
Although I don't often disagree with our friend Kċre, I'm of the opinion that the birth was in 1826 because of the pages of earlier baptisms also labelled as that year and the slow progression of recorded events through the months. I also know that the church year did not always begin on Jan 1 but actually started a couple months earlier. So perhaps that is why the writer switched to 1827 for that inserted heading.
You'll have to make your own determination now that you've been offered two different opinions.

A litle bit of information regarding change from one year to the next.
The church year is the overall number of the year Sundays and holidays with their specific texts for religious use. Church year is divided into days and periods that follow the New Testament chronology of Jesus' life and business. First Sunday of the church year is the first Sunday of Advent.
This is why the correct year is a litle tricky when reading the parish records.

You are right Hopkins, 1826  In 2016 the church-year starts the first Sunday in Advent (Nov. 27)

Here are the family leaving Kongsberg for Eidsfoss in Hoff April 6. 1857, see right page #11-16
Hans was an ironworker. Moving to Kongsberg he most likely worked for the Silver Mines
The children born in Kongsberg was bapt.in Kongsberg Church, the largest church in Norway with 2400 seats link
