11. Everything else I know about the individual: The following is from the Album: “JOHAN E. HANSON, a resident of section 31, Chippewa Falls township, is a native of Norway, born May 11, 1852, and is the son of Hans N. and Engebor (Anderson) Hanson, who were also of Norwegian birth…… The subject of this biographical sketch, Johan E. Hanson, was born at Konigsberg City(sic), Norway, and attended school at Eidsfoss. At the age of sixteen he entered a store as clerk, remaining for three years, and in 1871 came to America, first stopping in Utica, Dane county, Wisconsin. He was there employed one year on a farm, and then came to Pope county, Minnesota and worked in a mill at Chippewa Falls for about two years. The next two years he worked at milling at Swift Falls, Swift county, Minnesota. He then purchased a farm of 147 acres in Chippewa Falls township. This was improved by him and initially a portion of it was sold. He then bough seventy acres, which joined his, and now has 150 acres, finely improved. He is engaged in the stock business and also in general farming. He was married March 31, 1877 by Rev. Reque, to Miss Olia Peterson, daughter of Peter and Marit (Engerbretson) Peterson, natives of Norway. Mr. and Mrs. Hanson are blessed with a family of four children now living--Herman, Marie, Inga, and Sophus.
In his political faith Mr. Hanson does not stick to parties and is independent, voting for the best man. He has held the office of township supervisor, assessor, school director and school clerk, holding the latter at the present time. He was elected as county commissioner in 1886, and is looked upon by all as one of the leading and one of the most intelligent and reliable citizens in the southern part of the county.”
It is notable that the family changed livelihoods in about 1868, and became merchants. It is likely that the store in which he clerked from 1868 until his emigration in 1871 was the family business. #8232; 12. Resources searched: ILLUSTRATED ALBUM of BIOGRAPHIES of POPE AND STEVENS COUNTIES, MINNESOTA , record of baptism. census of 1865, record of marriage
13. What do I want to find out: My brother and his family are visiting Norway in August. Any information about sites that they could visit would be of great interest. This includes any immigration-related museums, the location of the places where the family lived and worked, and any burial sites of ancestors who did not emigrate. I am also interested in knowing whether a detailed genealogical tree has been worked out that includes Johan, and if so, by whom. We are interested in knowing whether there are living relatives in Norway that we could possibly contact and visit.
Also: The location of the homes in which he lived in Kongsberg, Eidsfoss, and Stromso. Information about Johan’s youth, including his schooling. Information about the family merchant business and store. Details about his emigration including the date and site of departure, and the ship on which he sailed. Information about his wife Olia Pedersdotter.
Thank you.

Johan Edvard Hansens father Hans N. Hansen was born Nov 25 1826, see #2. His parents were Niels Hansen, Eidsfos and Elen Hansdatter. (According to Norwegian naming practice he should have been named Hans Nielsen.)

Olea Pedersdatter is most likely Olia Pedersdatter born in Meråker, see #24. She was born out of wedlock and her parents were Peder Olsen Bentz and Marit Ingebretsdatter, Tømeraas.

Olia Pedersdatter was baptized at home by Ingebrigt Tømmeraas.
It is likely to believe that it was the father of Olias mother, Marit Ingebrigtsdatter. Ingebrigt Tømmeraas = Ingebrigt Johnsen, Nordre Tømmeraas. Ingebrigt Johnsen and Marit Nielsdatter with 2 children in 1865. Note also that Olia is a servant in this household.

Thank you for this information. Johan spent his first year in America in Dane County, Wisconsin, so the intention to go to Milwaukee is consistent with his actual history. Would Johan received formal schooling in the 1860's? In a recorded history he is reported to have stated, "I was born in Kongsberg and went to school in Eidsfoss." Eric |

Wikipedia informs me "Eidsfoss is a village in Hof municipality, Vestfold county, Norway. It is located near Lake Eikeren." So if published local history books exist for the area it means we'd have to search for books about Hof in Vestfold. Perhaps the Norwegian books “Hof bygdebok”, 3 volumes by Sigurd H. Unneberg; or “Hof Bygdebok”, 3 volumes by Hans Marius Trøseid might possibly have some information about schooling provided in or near Eidsfoss during that time period.
If he says he was schooled in Eidsfoss then I would believe him. How many years or how complete I cannot venture a guess. |

Thank you for the information, and the effort you put into finding it. What does "out of wedlock" imply? Did her mother and father ever marry? Was Olia raised in her father's household? Was she raised by her single mother? Is this situation related to her being a servant at age 16? Did this status put individuals at a disadvantage in life?
The information that I have about Olea in America is limited. She married Johan Hansen in 1877 in Swift county, Minnesota, and then lived on their farm in Pope county, Minnesota. The marriage document lists her father as Peder Olsen and her mother as Marit Engerbretsen, consistent with the information you have discovered. The US census in 1885 lists Marit as a member of the Hansen household. I do not have information about their immigration dates, whether they immigrated together, and whether her father immigrated as well. Are you able to find their immigration dates? Eric

Kongsberg and Eidsfoss is shown in this map. His father worked for mining companies in both places.
