| I have a life ring that I believe to be off the SS Doric (1) that was chartered to the New Zealand Shipping Company. The ring is clearly labelled with the word "Doric" and "Southampton", but also has two flags on it. The first flag is one I believe to represent the White Star Line, it has two horizontal stripes, the top red, the bottom blue, and a white star central to these. The interesting thing is the star has only four points, where as all the images on the internet show either five or six points. The second flag, which I believe dates this to the SS Doric (1), rather than the SS Doric (2) is the Flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand (1834). The current New Zealand flag was adopted in 1902, so since the life ring bears the earlier flag it must date it to the SS Doric (1). I would have liked to put up a picture, but sadly the way that this forum handles picture inserts is not that intuitive and I could not do it. I wonder if anyone can confirm if the first flag is definitely an early flag for the White Star Line, to help confirm my analysis? |

The first flag sounds like the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line flag, but the star have 6 points...

| Would that shipping company have had associations with the Doric (1) at some stage, as I believe it went through several companies? |

| Further to above, I have now discovered the flag is not the United Tribes of New Zealand flag, but more like the flag of Shaw, Savill & Albion. SS&A's flag is a slightly modified version of the United Tribes of New Zealand flag. The other flag could well be that of The Aberdeen Line, even though it only shows a four pointed star, it could have just been badly interpreted when painted on. Why would the two flags be shown together on a life ring labelled with the ship name Doric and the port Southampton? The Doric I was certainly chartered by SS&A between 1884 and 1895, but SS&A did not acquire Aberdeen line until 1905 I believe. Could this have been for the later Doric II, which I believe was also a SS&A ship (1949-1969)? Would SS&A have included the two flags together this late after acquiring the Aberdeen Line? The Doric II seems more likely now. |
