Looking for information about my great grandmother.
From the newspaper i find that she was charged for murder of her newborn baby, strangled with a shoestring. This incident is mentioned in several papers in March 1903.
Her name was Marie Dalberg, born 18.01.1881 in Norway.
She was not sendt to jail, as some influential businessmen talked well for her and she got the opportunity to go to Florence Crittenton Home. I am looking for documents of this incident and her whereabouts.

She went back to Norway some time in 1906.

Some information and copy of articles are linked below.
(Some writing is in Norwegian, but the newsarticles are in English)

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rtEYNRuyW98D3vVVegKf2BO1so8OS4DFaqm5tkdLIMs/pub

I really hope some one is able to help me out on this matter, as this is my closest family and I am the only one left.

Best regards from
Linda Marie

From the newspaper I can read that Anna Smeland is embursed for taking care of Marie Dalberg in county finance for 1904.
I also notice that Marie Dalberg is found at the home og Mrs & Mr Anton Johnson when the sheriff picks her up.
For Census 1905 i find Anna Smeland next to Mr & MRs Johnson. But this is all I can find of Mrs Smeland

It seems like you already have lots of information!

Here is Wikipedia about Florence Crittenton homes.

And more about the later history of the movement in relation to Minnesota:

Is this the Anton Johnson you found in the census?
link

It's a sad story and I'm sorry to hear it. You are wondering about the parts of the story that are not explained.

The librarians at the Minnesota Historical Society in Saint Paul, Minnesota, may be able to advise how to research an inquest and court hearing of 1903.

A volunteer for the Olmstead County Genealogical Society might be willing to check for more information.

I checked Chronicling America newspapers, but found only what is already posted.

The Smeland family is also a little hard to pin down. In the 1905 Minnesota Census there are four male Smelands living with Anne H Smeland. They are Johannes 1869, Ole 1884, Obert 1890 and Henry 1897. Henry was born in Minnesota, the rest were born in Norway.

Estimated birth year: abt 1850

Things might have been a little hard for Anne Smeland as well, since Henry is found in 1910 working as a hired hand (age 13!) in North Dakota. A little early to be on your own as a hired hand even in those days.

The Ole Smeland found living with Anne and the others in the 1905 Minnesota Census could be this one in 1917 living in North Dakota. Wife is named Bertine.

Olaf G Smeland
in the U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
Name: Olaf G Smeland
County: Sioux
State: North Dakota
Birth Date: 9 Feb 1884
Race: White

Likely his marriage record, indicates that Anne Smeland has a maiden name of Brunvold.

Olof Smeland
in the Iowa, Marriage Records, 1880-193
Name: Olof Smeland
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Birth Year: abt 1884
Marriage Date: 2 Mar 1910
Marriage Place: Worth, Iowa, USA
Father: Gunder J Smeland
Mother: Anne Brunsvold
Spouse: Bertine Bulie

Other ELCA marriage records give Anne the last name of Anna Runningen or Renningen.

An Ancestry.com tree indicates that the Smeland name comes from the Smeland farm, Seljørd, Telemark

Here is another record on one of the one of the sons of Gunder and Anne.

Edwin Smeland
in the Iowa, Marriage Records, 1880-1937

Age: 30
Birth Year: abt 1874
Marriage Date: 24 Mar 1904
Marriage Place: Worth, Iowa, USA
Father: Gunor Smeland
Mother: Anna Renningen
Spouse: Martha Bulie

His birth date is given as 21 Jan 1874 in a Ancestry.com Family Tree. That matches up well with this baptism record from Ancestry

ame: Eivend Johannessen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 21 jan 1874
Baptism Date: 8 mar 1874
Baptism Place: Kragerø, Telemark, Norway
Father's Age: 35y
Mother's Age: 24y
Father: Gunder Johannessen
Mother: Anne Hansdotter

Here another of their children, both Hans and Eivend (Edwin) end up in various Family Trees of on Ancestry.com

Name: Hans Johannessen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 9 jan 1872
Baptism Date: 1 apr 1872
Baptism Place: Kragerø, Telemark, Norway
Father's Age: 34y
Mother's Age: 22y
Father: Gunder Johannessen
Mother: Anne Hansdotter
FHL Film Number: 1282562
Reference ID: B4 p106 #23

So Anna H Smeland was a neighbor or at least lived in the same area in Olmsted County, Minnesota as Maria Dalberg and was hired to care for Marie Dalberg but it is unlikely that there is any familial relationship. She was Anne Hansdatter from Telemark.

Is there any way to find any records for Mrs & Mr Anton Johnsen? As I read it, they where neighbours with Anna Smeland in Census 1905?
I try to locate where she was living at the time of her crime?
I know she went to visit her uncle when she arrived in 1901. And I have the records of him and his family.
Familysearch.com here: https://familysearch.org/tree/person/MF47-RDX/details

There is not so far from where he lived to where the crime took place.
