I am trying to locate the origin of Hans Kittelson and Gunhild Torstenson.
The information I have so far is from their obituaries but the names of the towns seems to be incorrect as I cannot locate them on google maps.
Hans Kittelson DOB Sept. 2, 1840 in Boi Herra, Norway
Gunhild Torstenson DOB April 16, 1848 in Schian, Norway
Hans and Gunhild were married on April 12, 1869 and left for the US on April 15, 1869. They first settled in WI, then in 1873 moved to Dodge County, MN and in 1886 moved to Cransberg, SD. I am planning a trip to Norway in 2017 and would like to visit where they were from.

Thank you!

A candidate for Hans born in Bo, Telemark

Hans Kittilsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Hans Kittilsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 2 sep 1840
Baptism Date: 10 okt 1840 (10 Oct 1840)
Baptism Place: Bo, Telemark, Norway
Father: Kittil Holgesen
Mother: Margith Hansdr
FHL Film Number: 278270
Reference ID: 2:1SNZLV7

Hans and his family in the 1865 Norwegian Census

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0821&kenr=010&bnr=0041&lnr=000

This is likely their marriage record, took place in Skien so your spelling was a little off confusing you a little. See number 9. The date in the church record book is April 11, 1869.

It may be of interest that FamilySearch.org shows a Hans Kittelsen born 2 Sept 1840 in Bø, Telemark, Norway to parents Kittil Holgesen and Margith Hansdr. In such an index created by volunteers you sometimes see things spelled a little "Americanized" so they spelled it as Bo. The difference between an o and the actual ø MIGHT explain why in a much later obituary in America the spelling could have been as Boi - probably an effort to get close to the original SOUND of the word.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N41L-4QP

So - let's look at the original birth/baptismal record for that indexed entry. Those records are available at the Digitalarkivet website free for anyone with the patience to look for it. Here it is - record #99 on the pages linked -
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051011050098

This man is still living with his parents (spelling variations you should notice) in the 1865 Norwegian census for Bø.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0821&kenr=010&bnr=0041&lnr=000

I will continue to investigate this particular man for a bit of time and come back with any more details which might prove to be of interest.

-------------------
I've been doing the same research as the person who posted just above. It is only because there was no response yet posted when I started. Sorry.

In the 1869 marriage record in Skien (which is clearly the right couple), Hans is age 28 (born ca 1841) Gunhild is age 21 (born ca 1848).

If I'm reading the record right, says Gunhild was born in Saude. Maybe another candidate for Gunhild here:
link

1880 census
Hayfield, Dodge, Minnesota
Hans Kittleson 39 born ca 1841
Cornelia Kittleson, 32 born ca 1848
Matilda, Cornelia, Charlie, Annie, Telinda
link

Interesting that "Gunhild" often gets Anglicized to "Cornelia."

I believe the date of birth for Gunnild Torstensdatter should be April 6 1848, not April 16.
The baptismal record of April 20 is #28.
Her parents was Torsten Torstensen and Gunnil Danielsdatter, Kaasa.

eibache has identified a family for Gunhild living on Kaasa (Sauherad, Næs sogn). Likely it is their daughter Gunnil Torstensdatter who is living-working nearby as hired help on Lindem in 1865. Here again is the census record for Gunnhild: link

1865
Residence: Kaasa, Sauherad, Telemark
Torstein Torstensen 44 born in Saude
Gunnil Danielsdatter 46 born in Saude
Daniel Torstensen 13
Sigurd Torstensen 10
Gonne Torstensdatter 8
Gunnil Rollefsdatter 72, listed as Torsten's widowed mother

On the following link of places in this census district, Torsteinsens are on farm 0064 and Gunnil on 0073. link

.

Gunhild's family came to America in 1871, about two years after she left.
link

Emigration
on the bark Rjukan, from Skien 17 April 1871 to Quebec 31 May
Torsten Torsteinsen Kaasa 50
Gunnild Danielsdatter 51
Sigurd Torsteinsen 15
Gunne Torsteinsen 13
Rollef Torsteinsen 10

.

audreylosey, what does the obit for Hans or Gunnild specifically say regarding their departure? Do you have other sources as well?

If it is correct their ship left Norway 15 April 1869, they were most likely passengers on the bark Skien: link

Some pages of the passenger manifest for the Skien were lost, and about 160 passengers who were on the ship can't be identified.

Arriving in Quebec: link

BTW some of the information posted will be new to you, but some will repeat what you know already. Genealogies are built starting from known information. Add information if you can.

In one South Dakota record, Gunhild's maiden name was given as Nellie Thompson.

A family tree for Torsten Torstensen (accuracy not verified) link

Just remembered, Mike Oiseth's website and genealogy database has a lot of information about the Norwegian settlers of Dodge county.

Sorry Jane, the link did not work for me.

But nice job on the emigration of the parents. The original manifest can be found on Ancestry.com but the transcription of a very difficult to read manifest would have been an impossible job without your post. Here is one of the family.

Name: Torje Thortenson Koosa
Date of Arrival: 31 May 1871

Glad the link now worked!

Mike Oiseth includes various family members, but as individuals. They aren't linked as family.

Gunhild's father here
link

Mike kindly provides name variations. Gunhild's brother Sigurd born 1856 can be found as Sigurd Thorstensen or Sam Thompson.

Nice.
