Hello from Norway!
I am looking after descendants in the USA after Rønnaug Iversdatter Hammer, born in 1805 at the Sylte farm in Kvikne, Norway. She married Tjøstel Hansen Hammer, and moved to Hammer in Lalm, Norway. They got six children. In 1870, August 12´th, Rønnaug left Norway to emigrate to America together with her son Jacob T. Hammer, her daughter in law, Ragnhild, their son Theodore (3 months old), Rønnaug`s daughter Ingeborg, and Ingeborg´s son Hans Christensen (5 or 6 years old). In the emigration book in Norway it says they were going to Mc Gregor. I have found at "Find a Grave" one grave of a man named Jacob Hammer in Washington. Does anyone know#347; anything more? Rønnaug was a cousin of my great great grandfather.
I am so happy if someone knows anything more! Sorry about my bad spelling!

Seems as if they did live in Minnesota a short time. This is a baptism record for a son John born in 1883 in Minnesota. Odin is in Watonwan County in Minnesota. However this birth record does not seem to match any of the Census record. No son named John is listed. A son named Hans J is listed but he was born in 1879.

According to the Find-A-Grave site Jakob came to the US in 1870 with his wife who changed her name to Rachel and who died in between 1896 and 1898. Jakob then married an Elizabeth also from Norway.

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=32660835&ref=acom

That explains the Death Notice that gives his wife's name as Elizabeth Nelson.

In the 1880 US Census there is a Jac T Hammer living in Martin County Minnesota, also in the far south of Minnesota. The census lists Theodore as being born in Minnesota but that could be incorrect.

In fact there are several families with the last name Hammer living in Martin County for the 1880 Census. Some of these families also seem to end up in the state of Washington in the 1900's. The family living next to the Jac T Hammer family is named Lars (Louis) Hammer and I will discuss below.

Jac T. Hammer
in the 1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Jac T. Hammer
Age: 38
Birth Year: abt 1842
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1880: Cedar, Martin, Minnesota
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Regina Hammer
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Household Members:
Name Age
Jac T. Hammer 38
Regina Hammer 33
Theodore Hammer 10
Regina Hammer 7
Annie Hammer 6
Helen Hammer 5
Ingebor Hammer 3
Hans Hammer 1

Living in Odin, Watonwan, Minnesota in 1880 is this family also named Hammer.

H.K. Hammer
in the 1880 United States Federal Census
Name: H.K. Hammer
Age: 50
Birth Year: abt 1830
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1880: Odin, Watonwan, Minnesota
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Maridt Hammer
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Household Members:
Name Age
H.K. Hammer 50
Maridt Hammer 51
Emma Hammer 22
John Hammer 19
Sophie Hammer 16
Charley Hammer 14
Hans C. Hammer 15

It is interesting that there is a son? named Hans C Hammer born in Norway in 1865 whereas all of the children above him are born in Minnesota. So I am thinking that this is likely Hans Christian son of Rønnaug`s daughter Ingeborg,

Also it is likely that H K Hammer is likely

Hans Tjostolvsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Hans Tjostolvsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 23 jun 1830
Baptism Date: 11 jul 1830
Baptism Place: Vaagaa,Opland,Norway
Father: Tjostel Hansen
Mother: Ronnog Iversdr
FHL Film Number: 125632

And he is the brother of Ingeborg and thus the uncle of Hans Christian.

This family is living next to Jac T Hammer in Martin County Minnesota in the 1880 Census.

Louis H. Hammer
in the 1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Louis H. Hammer
Age: 26
Birth Year: abt 1854
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1880: Cedar, Martin, Minnesota
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)

Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Nor
Household Members:
Name Age
Louis H. Hammer 26

The Find-A-Grave site lists Lars (Louis) Hammer as the son of H. K. Hammer and Marit Roe. The couple living with children in Odin as shown above.

Here is the family arrival into America. It looks like Rønnaug`s daughter Ingeborg brought more than Hans C with her.

Passengers were

Jakob 28
Ragnhild Hansdatter 22
Rønnaug Iversdatter 68
Ingeborg Kjøstelsen 44
Svend Paulsen 11
Hans " 5
Theodore " Infant

The person who transcribed the ship passengers added the last name of Pauline to all of the children. The original passenger listing does not do but used " marks behind their names.

Jacob Kjostelsen
in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935

Birth Year: abt 1842
Date of Arrival: 28 Aug 1870

Based on the birth year and the arrival year it is likely that this is the infant Teodor son of Ragnhild. Some other census records give him a later birth year of 1871 or 1873 so it is worth being cautious. However he is located in King County Washington where a lot of other Hammer folk ended up.

Theodore J Hammer

Based on this death record I would say it is very likely that this is the correct Theodore

WOW! I am just amazed! Thank YOU very much for all the information! It s really interesting news! Really interesting that Ingeborg T. Hammer in the list seems to have to sons? I have not heard about Svend before. Both sons, Svend and Hans, has the middlename Paulsen, not Christensen. That confuse me.

If you look at the original ship manifest the names are Svend Pauline and Hans " and Theodor " . Meaning that Hans and Theodor have the same last name as Svend. That may not be true. If you look at the ship manifest from Digitalarkivet, only Svend is given the last name of Paulsen.

https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000409693

Hans is listed as Hans Kristensen

https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000409694

And Teodor has no last name

https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000409695

It is very possible that the person who filled out the ship manifest just assumed that the two children following Svend had the same last name as Svend.

This may be Svend Paulsen in the 1865 Census. Mother is Marit Tjødstulsdatter
