I am trying to discover where Andrew Andrewson Lubeck who emigrated to USA in 1871 and settled in Granby, Nicollet County, Minnesota, USA may have lived in Norway. This is all the information I have.
When I goggle "Lubeck" it takes me to Lubeck, Germany. He was definitely from Norway.
I have found him in USA Census forms. He is listed on USA Census as Andrew Anderson Lubeck and Andreas Lubeck
Is there a particular area in Norway that Lubecks came from?
Regrettably we didn't ask questions years ago. Now no one is left that can fill in the blanks.
.
Thank you for any information you can give me.

He clealy have "americanized" both his given name, his family name and the name of the farm he used.
Given name Andrew could have been Andreas or Anders
Family name Andrewson could have been Andersen or Andreasen
Farm name Lubeck could be Lybæk or Lybek.
Lybæk farms are found many places:
Enebak Akershus
Nannestad Akershus
Gol Buskerud
Faaberg Oppland
Nordre Land Oppland
Søndre Aurdal Oppland
Østre Toten Oppland
Rakkestad Østfold
Trøgstad Østfold

Now with some idea of when he was born there are resources available for searching...

An "Anders Andreas. Lybek" is recorded as leaving from Oslo/Kristiania in 1868 --
http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=em03011867tillegg&gardpostnr=1363&sokefelt=skjul

The 1865 Norwegian census captures what is probably that same young man with parents and siblings (in Fåberg, Oppland, Norway) --
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0524&kenr=008&bnr=0099&lnr=00

https://otjoerge.wordpress.com/norwegian-american-dictionary/ae-o-a-0-9/#0
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/census_abbreviations.html

It is never surprising to see variations in spellings and even in remembered dates. So the above is a very interesting 'possible'.

Sandra - next time you ask about someone be sure to share the vital identifying information we'd need to be able to try to help.

The Anders Andreasen you are looking for is most likely the son of Andrias Andersen from his first marriage with Randi Amundsdatter, June 15 1842 in Gausdal, see #25.
The baptismal record for Anders is in Faaberg, he was born July 27 1843, see #77.
Anders had a brother Johan born Jan 1 1846, see #10.

Hi Everyone.
Thank you for your replies.

I did have some of the USA census but not all.

Hopkins, I have gone on rootweb.ancestry and printed out the pages so I can make a better query. Also printed out Census Abbreviations used in the Census. Thank you for those suggestions.

I was overwhelmed at the thought of trying to do genealogy research in a language I don't speak so I appreciate everyone's help.

Many of us don't speak Norwegian - but having ancestors from Norway and an addict to genealogy now for a number of years I've picked up a few words and undoubtedly can't pronounce a thing correctly. I'm gradually getting better at reading the old records but will always struggle with horrible handwriting no matter how recent.

I gave you a link to a pretty good online 'dictionary' of translated words which are pretty common in Norwegian family history research and some online help with the censuses already but here is a link to an article about the Norwegian church records which is invaluable, especially those translations of typical church format column headings..
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/na20.html

Don't get too overwhelmed -- relax and enjoy! You'll learn that spelling wasn't important and that often 'why' is impossible to answer after this many years. There are many resources and you just have to teach yourself to use them. No rush - one thing at a time.

Bergethe Lubeck @ Oscar's birth

Andrew's son Oscar and his wife Pauline had 11 children, 1 that is my mother in law.
Oscar died on 08-10-1948 in Fairview, AB
It has been said that Andrew's daughter Christine may not have been his child. I can't find any birth record for her under the Lubeck name.

There are definitely some variants of ages and spellings of names. Some was the census taker and some is the transcriber, Some could be due to Andrew or Birgit not knowing the English language well.

Also I don't know where Andrew arrived in the USA but from the records he was mostly in and around Granby, Nicollet County, Minnesota USA

Maybe you can copy the pages and paste it in Word where you then can cut and zoom the picture.

Thanks Einer.

I copied and pasted and that worked!

I am now trying to make a "family" chart so I can understand the progression of Andrew's lineage.

Thank you for all your help eibache and Hopkins. If you find anything else please let me know.
