Christensen Twins – born August 18, 1889 in St. James, Watonwan Co. Minnesota
I am assisting the grandson of William Severn Christensen (who later goes by surname “Lee” after adoption).
He has authorized me to provide the family’s detailed personal information in hopes of breaking through the brick wall beyond his grandfather.
This grandson is attempting to find the Norwegian ancestors of the biological parents of his grandfather, William Severn Christensen Lee.
These individuals are:
Christopher Christensen (born about 1865) and Sophia K. Johnson (born about 1866), both parents shown as being born in Norway
It would be very much appreciated if you could reply to me if any of the following information pertains to any of your family or if you recognize any connections. Thank you.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Watonwan County Court House - Birth and Death records showed the entries of these twin boys:
Christopher John (Charley) and William S. Christensen male white twins marked illegitimate - born to Christopher Christensen and Sophia K Johnson aged 24 and 23 respectively, both parents shown as being born in Norway.
The twins were born August 16, 1889 and registered August 17, 1889.
The interesting thing is that of all of the “illegitimate” births in the register, these twins were the only listings that showed the father; also it was one of the few written in ink – the others were just penciled in. Assume that pencil was used so that the names could be changed later on?
The county records show that the boys were with their mother Sophia in St. James, MN, for several years after their birth.
These twin boys were also referred to as the “Palmer Twins” in various Lee family later correspondence.
The precise reason for this is not known, other than the fact that a large Palmer family lived next door to Sophia and her twins in St. James when she and her boys were being provided with lodging by Henry Berentson and his wife at the expense of the county.
The county had a Poor Fund –the 19th century version of Welfare - with a good bit of Victorian condescending going on: “poor”.

Later (1895?) The boys were adopted by the Torkel Lee family (my great uncle), who lived on a farm a few miles south of St. James in Long Lake Township.
The boys were given the last name “Lee”, which they went by for the rest of their lives.
Torkel Lee and family were residing in Long Lake Township, Watonwan County 1895 Census.
The 1895 census records show 2 young boys living with Torkel and his wife Thora and their 12 year old daughter Bertina.
Christopher Christianson Male 5 years old born in Minnesota.
Wilhelm Christianson Male 5 years old born in Minnesota.

In the 1900 Census the twin boys John C. Christianson (note that his name is shown as John C. instead of Christopher John) and his brother Wilhelm Christianson are still living with Torkel and Thora Lee.
In 1905 the two young boys, who would be 15, do not appear at the home of Torkel Lee.
But Torkel's sister Mari (Lee) Sulem (Sulheim) has with her: William Lee, male 15 years old born in Minnesota
Occupation: Farm Laborer .

William S. Lee and Christopher (Charley) Lee moved to Minneapolis sometime around 1906-1907.
There is a WS Lee (in family records) transcript from the University of Minnesota.
He got A's in Banking, Accounting, Math, but did not do well in some of the other subjects.
William Lee also took courses at William Mitchell College of Law at some point.
William Lee started with the Minneapolis Gas Company as a bookkeeper 1909-1910
William Lee met Lula McDougal in 1913. They were married in 1914 and moved in with Lula’s sister Leah Morehouse and her husband Cyrus Morehouse in South Minneapolis.
In the summer of 1914 William Lee and Lula Lee went to Havre Montana to homestead on 320 acres. They took the train there, purchased a team of horses, a wagon, plow and supplies and went to the land. The first summer they cut sod and planted wheat. After harvest in late August, they returned to Minneapolis and William returned to his job(?).
William Lee Draft Registration 1917 WWI - we assume that he was not drafted because he was married(?) Also he listed Manager Accounting Department Cedar Lake Ice Company as occupation. This was one of the companies that cut ice from the Lakes in the winter and stored it in huge cold houses insulated with sawdust for use in the refrigerator cars on the railroads and for retail sales to residential and commercial customers.
Christopher (Charley) Lee visited William in Havre during the summer. Charley got a job at a saloon on Main Street in Havre. He stayed and later got his own saloon in Glasgow, Montana.
Charley was very gregarious and stayed in Glasgow for many years and the two did not see each other as often.
Charlie entered the Army before WWI (assume 1916?) and was in the 3rd Company 166th Depot Brigade - Camp Lewis, Washington. Charlie entered the Army before WWI (assume 1916?).

Charley ended up at a VA Sanitarium / Home in Marion County Indiana. From the record he was listed as a cook(?) He was taken ill in the 1930s and was then spent his remaining years there. The illness that he had initially appears and then goes into remission for a time – perhaps he worked during those times.
VA Records: Christopher J. Lee died April 23, 1966 Buried at Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He was a WWI Veteran from Montana.

Thanks Kåre, but I am unable to access the site; I have tried many variations of cut and paste but all tell me that there is no such page.
Also, the William Severn Christensen that I am looking for was born on 16 Aug 1889 in Minnesota.
His father, Christopher Christensen was born about 1865 in Norway, which is only 15 years after the Severin Wilhelm Christensen that you found who was born June 25. 1850 in Kongsberg town, Buskerud County.
It is possible that there is a link, but I still need to be able to access the digitalarkivet document to confirm.
Thanks again.

I have a better candidate, he was born Nov. 17. 1830, do you want to look into his bapt. record or do you think he is to old?

Wilhelm Severin Christensen, parents; Christian Willachen and Ane Martine Johannesdatter. He was born out of wedloc, his father was a Musqeter, a soldier.

Wilhelm Severin Christensen, parents; Christian Willachen and Ane Martine Johannesdatter - born Nov. 17. 1830

This one appears to be a prime candidate; if this is the correct individual, he would have been only 35 years old at the time of his son's birth in 1865.
I think that I would want to look into his bapt. record.
Thanks again.

Wilhelm/William Severin, a rare combination.

In the 1865 census there were 0 persons with first names William Severin, and only 3 persons baptized Wilhelm Severin in the whole Norway

Wilhelm Severin Christensen, it can't be many of him born in Norway, perhaps only one. Still we don't know 100% if he is the right person.

Thank you, I agree that you have probably found the father of the person that I am looking for, who in various documents in Minnesota has been called Christopher Christensen / John Christenson / John Kristenson.

Is it possible to find if this Wilhem Severein Christensen b. Nov. 17. bapt Dec. 12. 1830, had a son who was born about 1865 with a name similar to Christopher Christensen, John Christenson, or John Kristenson or a combination of these names, who emigrated to America prior to 1889?

Thanks again, your assistance is much appreciated.

Palmer / Palme / Palma is not a terribly common name for Norway. Here are links to Helge Palmer who was a very early resident of Watonwan county, Minnesota:

Helge Palmer in Brown county in 1860 next to Palme Oleson and a woman named Julia:

Helge Palmer in Watonwan county, Minnesota in 1885:

Helge Palmerson in Watonwan county, Minnesota in 1895:

Helge Palmer in Watonwan county, Minnesota in 1900 (no date of birth, no date of migration but says he is naturalized)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6PX3-P1G?i=36&cc=1325221

Helge Palmer’s death, says he was born in Ringenke which is probably Ringerike.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD94-PYV

Death of Helge’s mother Ronnaug in Watonwan county:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDCJ-B51

Unfortunately Helge's children all appear to have been born in Minnesota and may be one of the parties in these two marriages from
Watonwan:
WATONWAN
D-045
09/20/1893
COOK, ERNEST W
PALMER, MARGARITA E

WATONWAN
D-028
07/06/1893
SWENSON, LARS
PALMER, PETRA

And of course there are Norwegian Palmers in nearby Brown county.

Here is Helge Palmson's likeliest baptism transcription:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NHFY-JK3

I hate to ask but have you looked for a baptismal for the twins? If the birth mother kept them for a while perhaps she had them baptized and named relatives of hers or the father for godparents.

Since we know so little about the mother, Sofie Johnson, here is a exceedingly long shot possible migrating from Arendal in 1888 with her father Edvart Johansen and siblings:

I have today contacted the grandson of William Severn Christensen to confirm whether there is any evidence of baptism documents/information that hasn't been made known to me.
Once that he replies to me, I will advise.

Thanks again, the response from the folks on this site to my inquiry has been phenomenal.

The father target Christopher Christenson or John Christenson was born in Norway about 1865, was single in 1889, possibly lived in Minnesota in 1889.

Here is a long shot possible C. John Christenson in 1895 Minnesota:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ6Y-4PN

And if he was "local" (but born in US) here is a Watonwan fellow named Johannes and he has an interesting brother named Christen in 1880:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ9B-H71

The reason I asked about the baptismal is it might possibly be in the ELCA database which you have already accessed.

Or born in Europe elsewhere than Norway in 1895 census:
