Unfortunately I'm not very good at searching in the different Norwegian databases, so I'm hoping some of you that are, can help me out (again). In my research I believe my third great-grandmother was Ellen Stenersdatter Gullickson born in Norway about 1840. She had to have emigrated prior to October of 1865 because she married my third great-grandfather Neils Ellefsen in Minnesota at that time. I don't have any further information on her, and I'd like to find at least her parents and when/how she came to the United States. Any help is appreciated.
Neils Ellefson Birth 15 JUN 1816 • Tanum, Brunlanes, Vestfold, Norway, but since they married in the U.S. I don't know if that will help.

The family seems to have used the name Mastre as well as Ellefsen. If this is her you do have a birth date question is if it is accurate

Ellen Mastre
in the U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current
Name: Ellen Mastre
Birth Date: 4 May 1837
Death Date: 20 Nov 1912
Cemetery: Concordia Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place: Walsh County, North Dakota, United States of America
Has Bio?: N

Elen Stenorsd
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1826-1940
Name: Elen Stenorsd
Gender: Female
Spouse: Niels Ellevsen Mastre
Child: Henry Maris Mastre
Church Name: St John's Lutheran Church
Church Location: Northfield, Minnesota

And a record for the death of a child where Ellen is referred to as Gullickson.

Ellen Gulickson
in the Washington, Select Death Certificates, 1907-1960
Name: Ellen Gulickson
Gender: Female
Spouse: Nels Mastre
Child: Elias Nels Mastre

Probably the family in 1880 Census. the 1900 Census gives an arrival of 1859 for Ellen. Would the first child not be the son of Ellen?

1880

I see that Nils and Elen had a son in 1866 who they named Stever. The name is a little hard to read in the original document so it could also be Stener. Many times in Norwegian families a child is named after one of the grand parents. This one is probably named Andrew in the 1880 Census. I think her name is this record is actually Stenersen not Henerson or in Norway Stenersdatter.

Stever Andreas Ellefson
in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1826-1940
Name: Stever Andreas Ellefson
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 9 Aug 1866
Baptism Date: 16 Sep 1866
Baptism Place: Olmsted, Minnesota, USA
Father: Nils Ellefson
Mother: Elen Henerson
Church Name: St Olaf Lutheran Church
Church Location: Byron, Minnesota

Yes good that you know all this information but we searchers do not. With a tough one like this one appears to be we need to build up a data base that helps the searchers find where she was from in Norway. So we are going to have to start by putting up information that is probably going to be familiar to you.

The family is found in Belle Creek, Goodhue, Minnesota in the 1870 Census

Ellen Elifson
in the 1870 United States Federal Census
Name: Ellen Elifson
Age in 1870: 33
Birth Year: abt 1837
Birthplace: Norway
Dwelling Number: 70
Home in 1870: Belle Creek, Goodhue, Minnesota
Race: White
Gender: Female
Occupation: Keeping House

It is a long shot but there is a Ellen Anderson born abt 1840 living in Belle Creek, Goodhue, Minnesota in the 1870 Census with her father Stena (prob Stener) Anderson.

1860

Following up on the long shot for Ellen Anderson in Belle Creek Goodhue.

A Elen Stenersdatter born in Telemark

Elen Stenersen

Mother: Aslaug Thorsdr
FHL Film Number: 278291

The original baptism record

#5

#6

Stener Aadnesen marrried Aslaug Thorsdatter. Stener birth year is listed as 1807 which is close to that of Stener Andersen of Belle Creek, Goodhue County, Mn.

Stener Aadnesen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Stener Aadnesen
Gender: Male

Marriage Place: Laardal,Telemark,Norway
Spouse: Aslaug Thorsdr
FHL Film Number: 278291

#3

And then married a Guro Thorsdatter in 1853

#2

And perhaps the family ended up in Goodhue County.

Stener Aadneson

Next record is from 1861

Steinar Aadneson

Name: Steinar Aadneson
Gender: Male
Spouse: Guro Tovsdatter
Child: Höje Havus Aadneson
Church Name: Holden Lutheran Church
Church Location: Goodhue County, Minnesota

Stener Aadnesen and wife Guro and 4 or 5 children left Telemark in 1859.

#21-26

I do not see an Elen, but #26 named Guro is age 20 and a half which would fit Elen

There his still some difficulty matching up the 1860 Census with the emigration record fro 1859. Stener fits well, but Hannah is much older than Guro. Elen from the 1860 record matches with the second Guro in the emigration record. Ben in the 1860 Census would have to be Halvor born Nov 20, 1846, however the baptism record for him shows a different mother named Anne Tarjsdatter. Oluff in the 1860 Census matches with Ole from the emigration record and no Tov is to be seen in the 1860 Census.

Here is the original record for Halvor.

Most of my family from that time period are from Goodhue County, Minnesota, so this does seem to fit!

I am coming to the conclusion that the wife of Thor Aadnesen who has the maiden name of Kari Aadnesen is a sister of Stener Aadnesen who is the father of the posters Ellen.. Here is a birth record for Kari that fits with the marriage record for her and Thor and with the same parents as those of Stener.

Kari Aadnesen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Kari Aadnesen
[Kari Hoyesen]
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 20 mai 1808 (20 May 1808)
Baptism Place: , Kviteseid, Telemark, Norway
Father: Aadne Hoyesen
Mother: Guro Steenersdr
FHL Film Number: 126954

The 20th of May 1808 begins on this right hand page, but I confess I cannot read the writing of these records.
