Halvor was born in Norway 1819, emigrated with his family to America in 1855. Halvor was a poor provider and left his family to fend for themselves when he left them in Capron Illinois to go mining in Montana. His son Gunder (now Jenner Johnson) went with Halvor. Jenner raised a big family ....some of his ancestors I have contact with.
Halvor (aka Nelson Johnson) died in 1899 - presumably in Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana. In spite of Halvor having many relatives in the area ....some of the ancestors I have talked to ...no one seems to know any of his story while in Montana for 20 years or more ...not even the Cemetary where he is buried. A story circulates among family that he was found shot to death in his cabin in 1899.
I have been trying to find anything on Halvor (my 3X Great Grandfather) for years.

Looking for help please.

According to this the Nelson Johnson who died in Montana in 1899 was born in 1862, too young to be your target:

The shot to death in a cabin in Montana in 1899 seems to be the story posted in most Ancestry.com Family Trees. If true should there not be at least a bit of a story on this in one of the local newspapers.

From one of the trees

"Death
1899 • Butte, Jefferson, Montana, United States
Halvor went back to his wife 20 years after leaving for Montana. She was not happy to see him, so he decided to go back taking his son Oliver and Henry (Jenner) with him. Halvor died there about 1899, found shot to death in his cabin."

Tried several search options under several names in the Montana newspapers suggested by jkmarler. This is a great site with a very
good search engine ....but no luck here.
I'll try to search under his son Jenner and see if I get a hit.

Nothing on Jenner for that time period and no on-line death certificate for Halvor.

Here from Chronicling America is the earliest mention of Jenner Johnson in Montana:

The semi-weekly miner. (Butte, Mont.), 13 May 1885. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress.

<http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84036033/1885-05-13/ed-1/seq-2/>

What name did Halvor actually use? There are 462 references in Montana prior to 1900 containing this phrase: "found dead in cabin"

The Nelson Johnson whose death was linked to earlier, died about a week after being injured in a mining accident. He was from Aurora, Illinois.

My Halvor Johnson was born in Norway, lived in Capron, Boone County, Illinois before going west to Montana. He was eighty at his death
in Montana.
He had several aliases: Halvor / Oliver / Nelson / Henry Johnson - perhaps he was hiding from something or someone ?

Having read a few articles at the newspaper site, I think a lot of Montanans were in hiding. As for Nelson Johnson there were at least a couple of men using that name and one of them had a larcenous heart with many prosecutions of him being reported.

So when did Halvor shove off to Montana the first time? The date of death you have (1899) is part of the "family tradition?"

I have been actively researching Halvor's History prior to him abandoning his family to go mining in Montana. Seems he left as early as 1859. His wife Randina was successful in her application for Civil War widow's pension when son Johannes was killed in the Civil War 1863.

Yes, the death date of 1899 seems to be from family tradition - I've seen no solid evidence of that.

Actually we've dealt with the family before at norwayheritage, a couple of times. Thanks Kaare for the geni with the family information. But there seems to be some "myths" in the text on that page.

Jenner Johnson was not single when he lived in Montana. Here he is with his family in the 1880 census in Nebraska:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8Y8-PNQ

In that census the eldest child is 5 and all three of the children were born in Nebraska.

As I reported before, the first newspaper reference to him in Montana was in 1885.

Probably him in the 1900 census (recorded with an Illinois birthplace)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MM58-SCF

He is named as father of four marriage participants in Silver Bow and Billings county:
Etta R
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F373-RNS
Anna Mae:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F33L-1X8
Edward:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F3QK-8MC
Jennie J:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F37K-X96

If all goes well, this is the obituary of Jenner's wife Mary Ann:
http://montananewspapers.org/lccn/sn85053157/1927-07-27/ed-1/seq-4/#date1=1883&city=&rows=20&words=Jenner+Johnson&searchType=basic&sequence=0&index=0&date2=2015&proxtext=%22jenner+johnson%22&page=1

July 1865 Halvor's wife Randina is alone in Boone County Census with the family.

Sorry I don't know how to attach it here.
