Berger Bergersen was born in Sør-Odal, Hedmark in 1810. His wife Lena Jacobsdatter died in 1862, and in 1865 he lives in Haugen, Sør-Odal.
On May 25, 1869 he and his son Nils emigrated to America from Oslo. Nils (Nels) married and died in Oklahoma in the 1930s, but what happened to Berger Bergersen ? I have no information about him after he left Norway.
Can anyone help me find information about him ? |

Maybe the best place to look would be near his son. This seems to be his son in the 1880 US Census in Missouri.
1880
His first child was born in Missouri in 1876 so he was there fairly early on.
From an Ancestry.ocm tree, his wife in 1870 also in Missouri
Name: Minnie Nutter Age in 1870: 13 Birth Year: abt 1857 Birthplace: Wisconsin Dwelling Number: 77 Home in 1870: North Salem, Linn, Missouri
1870 |

Probably the marriage record for Nels. The original record did not contain any information on Berger Bergersen.

Extensive info about the family here.
ID: I577 Name: Nils Bergersen Surname: Bergersen Given Name: Nils _AKA: Nels Bergerson Sex: M Birth: 1851 in Strom-Sor Odal, Hedmark, Norway Christening: 20 Apr 1851 Strom-Sor Odal, Hedmark, Norway Death: in Alva Municipal Cemetery, Alva, Woods Co., OK Burial: Alma, OK DSCR: Tall, thin, handsome with beautiful blue eyes. _UID: E8B354140C44D6119BBF00045A47876929E3 Note: Nels Bergerson was a Norwegian immigrant. Born Nils Bergersen, the son of Berger Bergersen and Lena Jacobsdr, baptized April 20, 1851 at Strom-Sor Odal, Hedmark, Norway. John Nutter fumed that his daughter would marry a "foreigner".
Nels was a fine farmer.
He committed Araminta, his first wife, to the Linn County Poor Farm and later to an insane asylum. Since Araminta was committed to an asylum, Nels was unable to divorce her. In those days, a man could not divorce his wife without her permission. The court would have to rule some sort of extenuating circumstances, such as dissertion, in order for a man to divorce his wife against her will. Since Nels was financially responsible for Araminto, the court would never let him "off the hook". He lived with his second wife, Temp (Anne Millsap), as common law wife until after Araminta's death. He and his children became estranged around 1890 - probably when Temp became pregnant with Walter. Emma told her daughter that Nels payed the Stevensons five head of cattle to take care of her. Stella was similarly farmed out to William Nutter. He promised his daugher, Estella, and her husband a farm if they would stay with him. He took John with him to Nebraska, and Emma reported that he worked him like a hired hand.
Nels and Temp had two children born during the common law period. They married in 1898 after Araminto's death and moved to Deuel County, Nebraska and then to Oklahoma where he died. Despite the estrangement between Nels and his children, there was continued contact over the years. As late as the 1930's Nora Evelyn Young, Nel's granddaughter, took her daughter, Betty Joyce Pullen, to see Nels. It was a strained visit.
Nels became a respected member of the community and a prosperus farmer. They also lived in the Capron, Enid County, OK. area. 1 Change Date: 21 May 2003 at 16:13:20

These folks went to an area were there were barely any other fellow norwegians. Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma had only a handful Norwegians in the 1860s. Berger Bergerson and Niels Bergerson arrived New York on June 16th, 1869. Does the arrivallist contain their final destination? Where is Niels and Berger in census-1870...

Hello, I just ran across your post, a bit late :-) How did you make out with finding info on Berger Bergersen? I was tracing my grandfather back in the early 90's and have some info on this topic. I actually spoke to Gail Morgon back at that time and she told me all about Neils Bergersen. Anyways, there is a Berger Sr, and a Berger Jr. Berger Sr would be Nels father, Berger Jr Nels brother. And I find it hard to believe either one immigrated because Sr was too old, and Jr was still having children in Norway at the date of ship sail.
My grandfather is August (Gus) Henrik Bergersen a half-brother to Nels and Berger Jr. My grandfather immigrated to Canada, where the rest stayed behind in Norway, Sor-Odal, Hedmark County, Norway.
Please feel free to contact me at rgberg780@gmail.com
Regards,
Ron

Thank you very much, Jackie. This would put Berger (Sr) traveling with his fifth son Niels (Nils) seven years after the passing of his wife Lena. |

The Norwegian transcription of the family in the 1865 census is a bit more complete than the transcription at Ancestry:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038037000836
The Bergersens and Bergerdatters in the greater household on Haugen in 1865 census are these. All are listed as born sondre odals prestegjeld: Nils age 15 Mari age 15 (Nils and Mari were twins) Marie age 26 married and child Kjøstel age 39 Kristian age 23
Ancestry's version of Norway Select Baptisms gives these children for Berger and Lina: Berger b 11 Aug 1833 Ole b 14 Dec 1835 Niels b 22 Nov 1837 Maria b 3 Sept 1840 Johannes b 17 Sept 1843 Ronnaug b 25 Mar 1847 Nils b 2 Apr 1851 Mari b 2 Apr 1851
Of these Ole Bergersen appears to have come to US also. Here he is with his family in Norway 1865: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038027039634
Here they are in Chicago,Illinois in 1870: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M64L-QC5
Here they are in 1880 Linn county Missouri: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6XK-7HZ
The son Oluf was born 24 (month and year not specified) and baptized in Chicago on 12 March 1871 at Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church as Olaf Carnilius Bergesen. Unfortunately, Berger is not named as one of the godparents of Olaf.
Likewise Berger is not among the godparents of an earlier child born to Ole and Stina named Karl Oskar b 21 Feb 1869 baptized in the the same church as Olaf.
A quick scan of the church registers didn't find deaths/ burials of members but there are many years of communicant records, perhaps Berger is there taking communion?
By 1900 both Ole and his wife Christina are back in Chicago, still there in 1910. Ole dies in 1911 and even though his death record states that he is widowed, Christina is still alive living in Chicago until she dies there 19 June 1931. In both the 1900 and 1910 censuses Christina is listed as mother of 6 of whom 3 are living. The migration years for Ole and Christina vary a bit between 1866-1868. The Norwegian emigrants list shows Christina leaving Norway as "Stina" in 1868, along with her 2 sons Ludwig and Christian / Christen and her mother Randine Knudsen: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000007140
Ole Bergersen did take a "sentimental journey" home to Norway in 1910. He visited his two sisters, as reported in Skandinaven: https://www.nb.no/items/2fce58a41e52d1eab387d3c272f3af9d?page=11&searchText=%22ole%20bergersen%22
In the article Ole's son Ludwig is mentioned as lawyer (advokat) Louis B Bergerson and a niece Dagmar Knudsen who travelled from Norway with him. Eventually Louis and Dagmar married and Louis died in 1916. (Yes, first cousins) An obituary on him was published in the St Paul (Minnesota) Tidende on 18 Feb 1916: https://www.mnhs.org/newspapers/lccn/sn90059649/1916-02-18/ed-1/seq-1
Neither brother Nils nor the two sisters in Norway mentioned in Ole's obit: https://idnc.library.illinois.edu/?a=d&d=CEX19111101.1.10&srpos=6&e=-------en-20--1--img-txIN-%22bergersen%22--------
