I've been chasing a name I thought was my mothers great-grandmother only to discover there is a different person listed on someone;s genealogy site associated with all of the children, including my mother's father's mother. So now I am wondering about a woman named Jane Sample. I have never heard the name until twenty-four hours ago. Any ideas about this. Association says its Norwegian, but looking it up it says it is Norman-Saxon and French origination.
It might be the cas like another person found by familysearch an Oscar Sample who was born in Norway might be an Anglicized version of a Norwegian farm name such as Sambla to Sample.
Donna Rae (Burn(e)s) Trogstad's Great Grandmother on her father's side. Her father's name is Albert (Alpha) Ray Burns. I discovered in a couple of records that it looks as though the spelling got changed from Burnes. Albert's father, Joseph Isiah Burnes and then his father Isiah Burnes, Jane Sample was his wife. Birth c.1780
Side note question...why are our post in the month of April?
The little-endian format (day, month, year) is the most popular format worldwide. Our posts today show that these are posted 13 March 2018 and the earlier were all on the 4th of the same month.
What is the connection to Norway for the family you have listed above?
Donna R. Burnes married a Trogstad and any Norway connection is only likely to have come from her husband's ancestry -- NOT the Burnes or Sample family line.
Hello! All of those links are ones I entered onto the web. But thanks. I know they are working.
Another Wikitree user has Jane Sample as a person married to Isiah Burnes (maybe Brynes). I believe some other link has them in Indiana. I think what I am learning is the war may have unsettled them. I found something that said Isiah was discharged in Washington D.C. out of a Minnesota regiment. I thought that was interesting and tried to track it but could not get anything from it, just a lot of other people's history.
But Burns and Sample are not obviously Norwegian names... they will not be in Norway records. Start with Donna's father and track the familles back in US censuses and records to learn what country(ies) they originally came from. That would better help you to find the right area to research in.
Ah...that was what you were saying to me. I thought so about Burnes, but not Sample. Sample is new to me and you obviously are familiar to it. Thank you. Jodi
