My great-great-uncle Andreas Knudsen was born Jan 9, 1857 in Rogaland, Norway and died Dec 13, 1929 in Kings, New York. He probably came to New York about 1880-1890, after being a sailor/seaman for several years. He settled in New York with his wife Elizabeth, born in Stavanger Aug 27, 1851, died in New York Nov 20, 1913.
But what did Andreas do for living in NY? Where did he live, occupation etc. ? His family in Norway was informed about his death in 1929, but I know nothing about his probably more than forty years in NY. I will appreciate any information about this. |

In the 1905 census in the Bronx, Andreas and wife Elizabeth are living on the river front and their occupations are each listed as "boatman." |

From the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Sunday 15 December 1929 page 23A col 2:
"KNUDSON, On Dec. 13, 1929, K.Andreas KNUDSON, beloved uncle of Samuel Pettersen of 464 46h St. Service at Fred Herbst Sons Memorial , 2501 5th Ave. Brooklyn, Monday 2 pm Interment Evergreens Cemetery."
So who is Samuel Pettersen? |

How can we understand the occupation «boatman» ? Where they running a ferry on the river or something? |

Samuel Pettersen is a son of Andreas’ sister Elen Charlotte Pettersen (who lived her life in Norway), and Samuel, born 1900, emigrated in 1920 and lived in Brooklyn until his death in 1963.
Maybe Samuel lived together with his uncle Andreas? As far as I know Andreas and Elizabeth did not have any children. |

The majority of people listed on the page have that same occupation. Others are listed as "steward" and doing "housework", servant, mate, watchman. I suppose that it might be as general as fixing ropes, sails, engines, loading and unloading, or sailing anything to do with a boat.

Might be Samuel's arrival in US in 1920 as fireman on board Biran: image: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9PY-4VQ5?i=1067&cc=1368704 text: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J6CD-NNP |

Very good! This is most likely Andreas and Elizabeth. His full name was Knut Andreas Knudsen. and here Andress has become the family name. Maybe some kind of misspelling is the reason we don’t find him in the 1910 and 1920 census? It seems that they moved around a bit: Queens in 1892, Bronx in 1905. When his nephew Samuel arrived in 1920 I have previously information from the source ‘New York Passenger Lists 1820-1957’ that he should visit his uncle Andreas Knudsen in 21 E 40th Street. (Unfortunately I am not able to find that source in Family Search). That address I find both in Brooklyn and Manhattan? |

Google seems to find it only in Manhattan...
Searching for just the first name Elizabeth and born in span of years, is how I found them in the 1892 census. But that was not successful for 1900 and 1910, unless you can come up with a better strategy?. |
