This was the specific occupation of a family member who was a merchant marine sailor for some years. Information taken from church book entry of his 1939 wedding in Bergen. I would like to know how this job title might be expressed in American terms.

Directly translated: "Radio mate".
A mate onboard a ship with radio communication responsibilities.
