The only information that I can find is sawritz Johnson married mathilda Johnson (vike). They took the name Skoien when my great grandfather Joe was born in the U. S. A. I have been trying everything I can to find some type of info on where they came from and any brothers or sisters of theirs I don't know off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could you give an indication og the relevant time range? Do you know where they were married? Sawritz is not a Norwegian name; have you seen it in several places or could it be a misreading of e.g. Lauritz?

Joe was born in 1894 in the USA so I'm guessing it was a 1887 to 1891. I have Joe's birth certificate. It says father is sawritz Johnson (skoien) and then Louis skoien under that. Then the mother says Martha Johnson then mathilda Johnson (vike) her obituary than said Matilda skoien. I have not been able to find immigration papers or anything. Except for Joe's wife who was Elsa Olivia Jorgensen.

Yes Joe had a brother named Trumen. Maybe it was a typo on the birth certificate. Because the baptism was at the same place it says on Joes birth certificate.

The top two on that are his parents correct? How do I find where they lived? City or rural area? I want to go back far enough so I can find out if I have a family crest and find out very long lost relatives

Thank you. I see where it says his name but more to the right of the page it does look like it says skoien. So was his dad Johan Andersen Skoien?

Yes his father was Johan Andersen from the Skøien farm. The farm is likely the one in the sub parish of Fluberg in the parish of Søndre Land. Here is a reference to the farm in the Rygh book of farm names. As you can see over the years it has had various spellings.

24. Skøien. Udt. skø:`e. #8213; i Skodhine (nordre Gaard) DN.
III 530, 1437 Skodin 1578. 1592. Skodenn 1604.1/1. Skøyen 1669.
Schøyen 1723.1/1.

Sk#491;ðin, se under Biri GN. 93.

Searching a little further I can find a Johan Andersen age 2, born in 1799 in the 1801 Norwegian Census. His father is Anders Pedersen and his mother is Marit Xstophersdatter (ie Christophersdatter}. The farm is spelled Schøyen in this record. There are quite a few people living on that farm but scroll down and you will see the family

1801 Census

Here is his original baptism record. See the second record from the top on the left page. The date of his baptism is listed as Ad 3 ie Advent 3 which in 1799 was Sunday December 15.

This is likely the emigration record for your Lauritz Johannessen age 19, emigration in 1880 from Land Parish. The 1880 year matches well with the year given in the 1910 US Census.

Here's an excerpt from the first page on the Skøien farrm in the Fluberg bygdebok. (Only Norwegian IP addresses.) showing the personal mark of Augustinius Skodin. This may be the closest you will get to a family crest.

There is not a lot of information on the wife of Lauritz but this lady matches the birth data in the Naturalization Record for Mathilda Skoiien.

Mathilde Johansen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Mathilde Johansen
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 4 jun 1873
Baptism Date: 20 jul 1873
Baptism Place: , Vinger, Hedmark, Norway
Father: Johan Bryn
Mother: Lina Hansdr
FHL Film Number: 1282607

#142

Perhaps her confirmation record, birth and baptism dates match but the last name she is using here is Jensdatter.

#26
