Very impressive Family Tree Laurie. I did notice that you do not seem to have a lot of Norwegian Parish Records.

You have a birth date for Jens Jensson Moe of July 9, 1850. Parents Jens Olsson Moe and Kari Persdatter.

The original baptism record would seem to indicate that he was born on July 6, 1850 and baptized on July 14, 1850.

#113

The transcribed record on Ancestry.com seems to conjure with that.

Jens Jensen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Jens Jensen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 6 jul 1850
Baptism Date: 14 jul 1850
Baptism Place: Laerdal ,Sogn Og Fjordane,Norway
Father: Jens Olsen
Mother: Kari Pedersdr

I am not sure where you obtained your information from but your dates for events in Norway seem a little off. Jens Jenson married Anna Kristensdatter on April 28, 1870. Here is the original record from Lærdal parish.

#12

And the transcribed record

Jens Jenssen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Jens Jenssen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 28 apr 1870
Marriage Place: Laerdal,Sogn Og Fjordane,Norway

FHL Film Number: 278150

The original record for Jens Olsen lists his birth date as Oct 14, 1787 and his baptism date as Oct 21, 1787.

A little hard to find but look third record up on the left hand page

You can also use your Ancestry.com subscription to find the record.

Jens Olsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Jens Olsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 14 okt 1787 (14 Oct 1787)
Birth Place: Lærdal , Sogn og Fjordane, Norway
Baptism Date: 21 okt 1787 (21 Oct 1787)
Baptism Place: Lærdal , Sogn og Fjordane, Norway
Father: Ole Thostensen
Mother: Mari Jocumsdr.
FHL Film Number: 126469

Ancestry then directed me to his marriage record.

Jens Olsen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Jens Olsen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 3 jun 1841
Marriage Place: Laerdal,Sogn Og Fjordane,Norway
Spouse: Kari Pedersdr
FHL Film Number: 126470

And I can use that record to lead me to the original parish record which I always want if I can find it.

In your Tree you have the father of Jens Olsen as Ole Thorsteinsen born 1752. This is likely his baptism record.

Ole Thostensen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Ole Thostensen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 2 aug 1752
Baptism Date: 6 aug 1752
Baptism Place: Laerdal , Sogn Og Fjordane, Norway
Father: Thosten Siursen
Mother: Rannei Olsdr
FHL Film Number: 126469

That record gives you his birth date and the names of his parents.

The original record is found 6th Aug record right hand page. He was born out of wedlock so the mothers name comes first.

You can also use the Norwegian Census records to find information on families. Here is Tosten Pedersen and wife Kari Larsdatter living on a Præstegaard in the 1801 Census. A Præstegaard is minister's farm and farmhouse, rectory, vicarage, parsonage etc.

1801 Census

A Præstegaard does not always have a name as do most farms. There are a lot of farm names in your Tree. If you want to find information on a specific farm it is almost always necessary to use the farm history books the Norwegian call Bygdebøk. For Lærdal there are 5 volumes called Lærdal bygdebok and written by Espe and Hovland. They can be found at various libraries such as UND>

Thank you so much for all that information. I will update my Ancestry.com tree.

I am hoping to visit Laerdal in the next year or two so this will be very helpful. I'm hoping to visit a farm where my family lived.

I have a year of 1882 of the family coming to the US, but that is all I have - does anyone have any idea of what ship they came over on, what date(s), from what port did they depart and where did they arrive?

Thanks.

A possible for you. A Jens Jensen from Lærdal born about 1871 and part of a family left Bergan in April 21, 1882. Probably travelled by feeder ship to England and from their on a large ship to America.
