| I’m looking for info on my 3x great grandparents, Jorgen and Asjer Knutson. Jorgen was born about 1825, Norway and died 17 Aug 1884. Supposedly in Minnesota (the Polk County area). Asjer was born 8 Jun 1838, Norway and died 17 Oct 1909 in Hubbard Township. The death record of their daughter, my 2x great grandmother, Oline Berthea Knutson, states that Asjer’s last name is Underberg. Possibly her maiden name? I don’t have either Jorgen’s or Asjer’s birth records, and I don’t know where in Norway they are from. Anything helps, much appreciated. |

Were Asjer and Jørgen married in America or Norway?
Underberg is likely a farm name. There is a Underberg farm in Åseral, Vest-Agder but I have not found a Asjer connected with it. The closes I have come to the birthdate you have given is this Askjer.

| I don’t know where they were married for sure, but I know that their firstborn child, Knut J Knutson was born 18 Mar 1872 and died 11 Mar 1889, somewhere near Climax, MN (the Knutson’s are buried in Sundet Cemetery). Whether he was born in Minnesota or Norway I’m not sure, but I seem to remember him being born in MN also. |

Jorgen and Asjer Knutson are buried in Polk Co. MN -- or at least both memorialized by a gravestone --

Is it possible that the family is shown in the 1885 state census for Polk Co.? Only the original poster will know whether or not their children closely match what is given on that document.

At least the births of TWO of the daughters match close enough the 1900 US census for Asjer Knutson in Polk Co.

So looking back at that 1885 census - the oldest child listed there was born in Minnesota 13 years earlier.

| Yes. I have copies of those censuses and that oldest child must be Knut because that would line up with 1872 birth date. I have Asjer’s death certificate and her parents and exact birth place are not known. I have searched for Jorgen’s death certificate, and I even sent in requests to county recorders in the area to no avail. These people have been a longtime brick wall for me. |

Jonah -- Consider looking for the church congregation in Polk Co. MN where they were members. A Lutheran minister often made note of where a new member of the church had originally been baptised and/or confirmed. The name of parish in Norway would be a gold mine for you.
I had to take a trip to view the old church records in rural Iowa for several of my own ancestors. The spelling in the American church records was a bit off - but I was able to work it out using a Norwegian gazetteer. Another of them had a parish mentioned in an online newspaper obituary in that same rural area.
I've seen others have luck with the Lutheran records (Evangelical synod?) that Ancestry has put online. Subscription repositories like Ancestry can sometimes be used for free at local public libraries and/or family history centers.

This may be her traveling to America. The transcriber had a tough time with this one, but I think the original record shows her last name as Tovsdatter.

Also probably her in the 1865 Norwegian Census, in Frysdal, Telemark.

She left Frysdal, Telemark March 26, 1867 for America. See number 40 right hand page. No sign of Jorgen so it is likely that they were married in America.

| Wow!! This is awesome! Thanks so much. Should I accept this as correct info and put it in my tree or are you not too sure about it. I can say it looks very convincing for sure. Also this is a HUGE coincidence: I can’t remember where I got this info from, but I have her name in my tree as Asjer T Underberg. That T probably stands for Thovsdatter! |

| I would be quite comfortable putting it in my tree. It is of course up to you. Might be a little harder to find Jørgen but people tend to group together so looking for him in Telemark might be a start. |
