I have struggled and failed with this bygdebok passage discussing the social position of cottagers in the Alenfit farming community:
"Det er heilt klårt at det var såvidt det hangla og gjekk for husmannen, og meir venta han seg nok ikkje av livet heller."

Any help appreciated. My impression is, cottagers were regarded about as Americans today regard the homeless.

"It's quite clear that the cotter was barely muddling through (in life), and he probably didn't expect more from life either."

Not to be understood as a negative statement about the cotter, but more a fact that he was a man of few means, and low expectations in life.
