With apologies I know this forum is not a translation service. When the writer of my bygdebok moves from facts and figures to metaphor and analogy, I as a foreigner am quickly lost. Here the author introduces a passage about the behavior and morals in rural western Norway 300-400 years ago..."om dei låg under for låke tildriv, Eller om hugen deira stod til det som var rett og godt og edelt, sjå då kvem vi straks i beit".
I think he means that it is hard to know what was driving people 300-400 years ago; what was going on in their heads:
... whether they were subject to bad inclinations or whether they wanted to do what was right and good and noble, then we are immediately in lack (of an answer)
