My bygdebok author is telling how schools did not appear in rural western Norway until well into the 1700s. Then he says:"Før den tid måtte dei greie seg med det som deknen (klokkaren) lærde dei. Og den opplæringa var einsidig religionslæring, og deknen kunne ikkje rekke fram til all."

What is he saying? "Covers" as a source of learning? "Clocks"? Something I am missing here.

Degn (nynorsk: dekn): in older time in Denmark and Norway a man who assisted the priest during the worship service and led the hymn song. The title Klokker is the same; The bell man, verger, the priests' assistant.

"Before that time, they had to cope with what the verger (the bell man) taught them. And that training was unilateral religious education, and the verger could not reach out to everyone."

Thanks very much. Surely, only a Norwegian would know this!
