My great grandparents and grandfather emigrated from Gransherad to America (or Canada?) in 1861, and settled in Wisconsin. I was told previously they most likely would have departed from Porsgrunn or Skien. Is there any possibility of locating any information, e.g. name of ship, route, and/or passenger list? I suspect I know the answer already, but just want to confirm so I don't waste more time looking. I've been told there are no records anywhere of ships and/or passengers from Norway to America or Canada in 1861, yet I have -- in the past -- come across one or two records; however, I can't recall which website I saw them on.

You are right, there are no records for 1861. The records you came across may have been on our site, as we have copiled some names of passengers which were printed in Norwegain newspapers, and somme other additional sources. Check the 1861 index of ships departing Norway

Borge: Sorry for the confusion. . .when I previously tried to post a reply, the message (a duplicate of the reply to mine) sent before I could stop it! Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion. You're right -- I believe it was on your site. I checked out the 1861 index link you suggested but came up with zilch. It's nice, though, that you've been able to locate any passenger lists at all given the lack of recordkeeping. As usual, thanks for the advice.
