To lyndal40 and jkmarler,
Thank you so much for your replies - you are truly amazing people!
You have given me so much helpful information, which I had not been able to find previously (I am by the way the 'Nash' family tree).
At the moment, given the evidence I feel that my Sam Cooper and Samuel Isaksen Kurvander are not the same people after all. I feel that the Samuel Issacson in Michigan is probably SIK, rather than my Sam.
However, there are so many similarities and coincidences that it has been both exciting and frustrating at the same time. Especially, as Samuel Isaksen was roughly the same age and was a Cooper by trade. In term of the age, my Sam (annoyingly) is recorded as different ages on all his records from 1841 to 1851 with the most popular being around 1845! He also says that he is born in London in later censuses (but that may be because of anti-foreigner feelings at this time).
Unless, my Sam had a double life! There were 7 years between marrying Matilda Martin and having his first child Matilda Ada - my great grandmother (with no recorded death of Cooper children during that time), so perhaps he had a 'girl in every port'. LOL!
However, I will continue to research using the information you have kindly provided. It is interesting because my great grandmother said that he spoke a different language on his death-bed and that he had said that his actual surname was something which sounded like 'Cooper', so I know that I am on the right track. I will also follow up the lead you gave on his father Henry (Sam also named one of his children Henry (second name) and the fact that his father was a Carpenter (snedker).
Just one last question please, in terms of his children's names:
Matilda Ada (1879) Hannah (Annie) Elizabeth (1882)
Lima/Lemas/Lema Samuel (1884) - boy Alma/Almas Henry George (1886) - boy Atlanta Catharine (1888)
You will notice that Lima and Alma are boys! What strange names! Why I thought Samuel may be of Sami or Kven origin is that Amma and Leamma are recorded as boys names in these cultures. And Atlanta (girl) is recorded as Atla. However, I am now wondering if perhaps Lima, Alma and Atlanta were just names of ships!
Any comments would be gratefully received.
Thank you once again for taking the time to answer my questions.

Other people from Norway have made the decision, choice etc to be known as Cooper. Here is one taken from the WWII Draft registration cards: Name: Stephen A Cooper Gender: Male Race: White Residence Age: 53 Birth Date: 4 Oct 1889 Birth Place: Arendal, Norway Residence Date: 1942 Residence Place: Kings, New York (City), USA Relationship to Draftee: Head Military Draft Date: 1942
Not that his choice reflects your Samuel's but something to think about: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052870002404 |

And perhaps he made a direct translation from the Norwegian word bødker to the English word cooper?
There are 330 listings of Norwegians with the last name Bødker born between 1830 and 1860 in the various online census and church records at the Digitalarkivet. Found none named Samuel but any of them could be siblings or other relatives and seeing where they were born might give you a parish to look into for Samuel:

Here for instance is an Henrik B. age 12: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058303000926

Hi Jackie,
That is absolutely brilliant, thank you so much. That is so interesting that others have taken the name Cooper. I will definitely undertake the research you have suggested.
By the way, Thomas Martin-Cooper born 1867 ,I believe he was Samuel's step-son. In the April 1871 census, he is named as Thomas Martin living with his grandmother (Thomas is also his grandfather's name). Unless, Samuel fathered him and then disappeared off to sea and then came back 4 years later! But, I think it is more likely that she had Thomas with another man, so he was illegitimate, and then Samuel took him on when he married Matilda.
I can't wait now to undertake some more research based on what you have given me.
Thank you so much again - and if I discover anymore I will let you know.
Regards,
Catherine

Likely the explanation.
Checking the Ancestry data base "All New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 Results"
I find ships named Lima, Alma and Atlanta.
But the middle names of the boys of Samuel and Henry may be relevant. |

Hi Anton,
Thank you so much - that is brilliant!
I think that you have helped me to conclude that he named most of his children after ships! How did you find them that quick - I am so impressed.
Also, thank you for undertaking the research on 'Sam' and 'Hen'. Again, I didn't think of that, so that is really useful.
Best wishes and I am so grateful for all your help.
Regards,
Catherine |
