Hi all! Looking for the emigration and immigration lists of my 3x great grandparents and their two children, Magda and Hagbert. According to a family story, they arrived in Quebec in 1888 and when they got there, Hans gave his name as Hans Marcussen Sand but was interpreted as Hans Sand. They came from the Borg area of Vestvågøya in Lofoten. Hans went to Minneapolis to work for a lumber camp after immigrating for a year, and then the family moved to Perley, MN. |

A little hard to read the original but that accounts for the transcription. The last four passengers on the page.

Wow, that’s great research, thanks! And regarding dates; Hans born 1857, Berntine born 1863, Magda born 1884, Hagbert born 1886. These are definitely the right people. |

Seems like an artifact of the transcription. They are alll together in the original. (4232-4235)
Another strange thing in the trasnscript is that both parents are described as ug, i.e. ugift/unmarried, but that just seems to be due to a "copy" mark that has run too long. In any case, they were married on May 12th 1884:
Hans Eilert Markussen Norway Marriages, 1660-1926
Name: Hans Eilert Markussen Event Type: Marriage Event Date: 12 May 1884 Event Place: Borge Prestegjeld, Nordland, Norway Event Place (Original): Borge, Nordland, Norway Gender: Male Birth Date: 1857 Father's Name: Markus Has Spouse's Name: Berntine Dorthea Josefsdr Spouse's Gender: Female Spouse's Birth Date: 1863 Spouse's Father's Name: Josef Ludvigsen

It is interesting that Hans Markussen's father Markus has a last name Hass, unrelated to the farm. The bygdebook hasn't much to say about him, but names his wife as Ane K Pheiff, probably of a clerical and/or merchant family. |

That’s correct. Markus’ last name Hass was sort of a second last name, and it was passed down from generations until it ended with him. Hans did not inherit this name. Ane’s family was from even farther north than Borge. Her mother was from Myre (Dverberg) on Andøya. Her father was supposedly from Flakstad and was a priest of some sort. |

There is a tree on Ancestry with a photo of Hans Markussen. Here is link to the record in case you haven't seen it. According to the data in this tree as well as a bygdebook entry, his maternal grandfather Stie Pheiff was an innkeeper, but I did also see an online tree according to which he was a priest and innkeeper... |

Yep, that’s the family tree of mine that I run on Ancestry. I found that photo in a box of photos from my grandma’s things. The back was labeled “Grandpa Sand” and I figured it must have been him. And yes, I think I remember hearing Stie being listed as an innkeeper as well. One problem I had with Stie was his birth record. I can’t find it because if he was in fact born in Flakstad, then the records for that area don’t go back far enough. |

Too bad. I post this clipping from the book Med prestene i Flakstad og Moskenes gjennom 300 år by Nils Mikal Flakstad, in case you haven't seen it. There are a few pages about Jonas Friderich Pheiff, who was the parish priest at Flakstad from around 1760 until his death in 1778.
Edit: The clipping above lists the known children that Jonas Friderich Pheiff had with his wife Kierstina Margrethe Friis. After Jonas' death in 1778, his widow married Jørgen Grach, the parish priest in Borge. |
