My Great-Great-Great Grandfather Ole Anderson (-sen/son?) also has a name "Liumstuen" next to his name. I'm unclear whether that name "Liumstuen" is a surname or some kind of place name. Does anyone know if it's a surname or a place? I ran it through GoogleTranslate and I think it means "limestone" in English, so that only has me more confused.

I believe he was born in Follebu, Østre Gausdal in 1826. He died in Barron County Wisconsin, USA, at some later date, though I'm not 100% clear on the year/date of his death. He was married to an Ølia Østensdatter. Their daughter, Christine, a triplet, is my maternal Great-Great Grandma. (I guess that last comment is a bit obvious.)

Thank you.

From the 1875 Norwegian Census

Rural residence:

0008 Lium (Liumstuen)

Gausdal, Oppland

From Oluf Rygh: Norwegian Farm Names

Listen over gårder er hentet fra "Norske Gaardnavne".

v.4, p.184
3. Lium. Udt. lí`ómm. #8213; i Lidom DN. V 259, 1393 (nordre)
DN. XV. 56, 1441. Lyder DN. I 567, 1442 i Lidom DN. X 170,
1457 i Lydom DN. X 176, 1462(som Parter nævnes 1393 Giæiks-
gardr, 1457 og 1462 Mategardr). Lyenn 1520. Lidom St. 139 b.
Lium 1578. Liidum 1594. Liunn 1604.1/4. Liumb med Mattegaard

Indl. S. 15). #8213; Med
Hensyn til Partnavnet Geiksgarðr kan jevnføres Gjeksrud og Gjekstad
i Vestby (Bd.
her, allerede i 14de Aarh. (DN. II 254 RB. 127. 131).
v.4, p.201
33,4. Liumsæteren. Udt. lí`ómmsæ:tra.

I think I first saw that name appear on this passenger manifest (#150). From there I don't recall if I saw it in anything more official.

Thanks for your help! Your information definitely answers my question. Name of a farm in Follebu--thus, not part of surname. I have been building my own family tree and didn't want to add errors to it.

The farmname Liumstuen consist of two words; Lium from old norse líð, and stuen ("house").
Liumstuen = "The slope house"

The main Lium farm are also situated in a slope/hillside (Østre Gausdal valley):

Thank you so much. Is the picture you shared an actual photo of Liumstuen farm or an example of something similar?

The previous photo shows the main farm in the hillside where Liumstuen is located. The main farm in called Lium. Liumstuen was originally a subfarm under Lium.

Liumstuen is behind the back of the photographer when he shot the photo.
The red square on the photo below shows the same houses as the previous photo.
The red x shows the location of the photographer.
The yellow circle shows Liumstuen.
Click photo to enlarge.

The current owners of Liumstuen have a webpage on Facebook. In local dialect, the farmname is today spelled Liomstugua. They run a small farm with a herd of the sheep breed "Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace", and they sell slaughter and skins from sheep and lambs.
