My family originated in Norway, on a farm named Rolla located in Hedmark, on the eastern side of the country bordering Sweden, in a little town named Hof, across the river from Flisa. It is situated in the wooded hills to the west of the Glomma river.
My great great grandfather arrived in the USA with his little family. His name was Oluf Christiansen however he added Rolla, the name of the farm where he was born.
I am interested in the family home, would like to locate the church, identify correct spelling of names so that I can begin searching for more records.

Maybe come in contact with other members who had ancestors in this part of Norway.

Any help is appreciated.

Your GG Grandfather born 1831, married to Olivia Johnsdatter?

The 1865 Norwegian census enumeration for the farm of Rølla in the Hof clerical district if Hedmark, Norway -
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&knr=0424&kenr=001&bnr=0094&lnr=000

There will be available to you the censuses of 1865, 1875, 1900 and 1910. The parish church records of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths, etc. All free and all online.

I'd recommend that you start by learning more about Hedmark and Hof areas.

That was really fast.
I don't see an Olive Johnsdatter in my family tree at all.
I'll give it a try though and start searching.

Thank you!

In a very quick search I didn't find Olaf Rolla in any US records either... so perhaps he died shortly after emigrating and perhaps his wife, Olivia, also died quite early or even before he emigrated. I can't help with that at all because I don't know anything about them.

You have a family tree already? Done by who and when? Is it complete with good source notes?

The Norwegians that regularly check these message forums and who will be waking in just a few hours can help you get a really good start but you should provide them with good info to start with.

Hof records of births/baptisms in 1830-1831...

#66 on page 234

So a quick scan through the online images of the Hof parish records found TWO baby boys who could be your GG grandfather. The second, born January 12 1831, is listed as born on Rolla farm. Parents are given and the baptismal witnesses are listed on the column on the right hand page.

I have no idea. You should probably expect to investigate that sort of question through a history of the area.

Please be aware that Ancestry is a subscription based website and not everyone is a member willing to spend that money. I tend to use only the FREE websites myself.

I see you already had information about the parents of your GG grandfather. Your second posting above nicely matches the parents listed in the birth/baptism record I linked for you.

You can search for other parish records - free scanned parish records through the Digitalarkivet website.
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/kb/browse

FamilySearch.org also has an outline of the records for Olaf Christiansen/Kristiansen Rolla that they have gathered. It appears to give detailed dates for children's births/baptisms. That would make it even easier to gather copies of the original records.

Good luck and enjoy your research!

More than 100 years ago, historians published a series of books called "Norwegian farm names", containing 50000 farm names and thoughts about their origin. When trying to understand the meaning or origin of Rolla, they gave up; "I can not explain the name and know nothing else like it."

However, the Hof bygdebok published 1983 gives an idea of its origin:
It says that in the churchbooks from the 18th century, the farmname is spelled Røllag. Written that way, it's very reminiscent of the township Rollag in Numedal, which locally is pronounced Røllag.

The wife of parish priest Søren Lemmich in Hof in the 18th century where born in Rollag in Numedal, and the first people who settled at the Rolla farm had connections to the Hof rectory. So the thoughts are that the priest's wife came up with suggestions of farmnames for the new settlers, and that she suggested the name of her place of birth. This is not very common, but seems to be the only plausible explanation for this name.
More common is that the meaning of the farmname is related to the nature and the location when the farm was created:
Nature names (hills, slopes, skerries, headlands, islands, waterfalls, marshes, surfaces, etc.)
Names derived from the use of the land (ports, roads, owned and the like)
Names from trees, shrubs and plants
Names related to animals and wildlife
etc

The farmname today is written and pronounced Rølla, where the "ø" is like the vowel in "girl", and not like the vowel in "roll".
Type in Rølla in the textbox here and press the play button to hear the local/norwegian pronunciation.

Todays street address for Rølla is Titsangen 14, 2266 ARNEBERG

Rølla on Google maps:

Hof church, built 1860. The old church which was about 260 years old was demolished in 1861. Small parts of the old church are kept at Oslo University's antiquities collection, and could be from the early 13th century.

#132 Oluf, born 01 Jun 1837, Hof, Hedmark

Emigration from Trondheim on 19 Apr 1882: Oluf Rølla. Destination Cumberland. Ticket paid in America.

Immigration on the steamer Lord Clive on 15 May 1882, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Census-1900 Olaf Rolla in Cumberland, Barron, Wisconsin, United States

Census-1905 Oluf C Rolla in Cumberland, Barron, Wisconsin, United States

Census-1910 Oluf C Rolla in Cumberland, Barron, Wisconsin, United States

Death 1916: Oluf Christiansen Rolla

His wife Johanna Margrete Rolla died May 1st 1899.

The 4 pages about Rølla in Hof Bygdebok. (Please note the order of pages)

The history book says that Kristian Olsen Rolla drowned in Glomma. The body was recovered in Grue, some km's further down. His wife had died 4 years earlier. Their children:

Oliane 1829
Ole 1831 (next owner of Rolla)
Christian 1833
Oluf 1837
Karen 1841
Arne 1843
Edvard 1850

So the children were quite young when they lost both their parents. The youngest, Edvard, lives with his brother Christian in census-1865.

Hi Mindy,

I randomly searched "Rolla Farm Norway" and found this thread...which is awesome!

For a more detailed family history you will want to reach out to Ron Rolla, he did the trip to Norway years ago and has fully documented the whole family tree on Genealogy.com.
