I have come across a listing of public absolvement in the Oyestad church book. I would like to find out more about the practice, the nature of the discretion, and some verification of the people involved. There are no farm names associated with the the two parties, but I am pretty sure who they were. The wife being Maren Christensdatter Natvig who tragically dies in Sept 1781 about a year and a half after the incident. Could her death be related to the incident? Was there some shunning of the guilty parties involved? Her husband was Ole Mogensen a skipper listed in the bydgeboker for Oyestad (under Skarpenes), but I don't believe there is any mention of the absolvement. I couldn't find anything in the Nedenes Tingbok 1778-1782, but i believe they stopped fining before 1780. I did find the probate for Maren; link below. Beyond her children's names, I couldn't read much of it. Without a farm name it is difficult to identify the correct Jen Christensen, the third party involved. Maren did have a brother Jens.

To me it looks like the public absolvement also concerned the two people on the line below; Tørris Pedersen and Niels Jensen, and that all four had committed Altergangsforsømmelse, i.e. had neglected holy communion.

On the line below that, it says Alle 4 fra Colbiørnsvigen; all four from Kolbjørnsvik, so this is likely not about the Maren living at Skarpenes. Here are some alternative candidates, living at Kolbjørnsvik after the turn of the century.

Thanks ToreL. I thought this was a more serious offense. So it's not quite the good story I imagined, anyway, and wrong family. I should have read the churchbook more carefully. I thought the second two names were witnesses or something from Colbiornsvigen, seems strange all four were not listed above. I will try to do better reading the correct Maren's probate - maybe there is something interesting in that.
