Hans makes a brief appearance in the Family Tree. 2 Feb 1866 marries Maren Thorine Christensdatter Vestermo at Holden Lutheran, Kenyon MN
They have one daughter Maren Hansine Hansdatter Lihme born 21 Aug 1866 Holden.
Hans' wife Maren Thorine dies soon after FaG #34624965.
Hans disappears. Many thanks for any ideas where he came from or went to. ~~Kay

Good clue to drop the Lihme/ Limie. Minn Cemetery Inscriptions has Hans Haraldson at Aspelund Immanuel at Wanamingo buried with Lars and Gunnil Hanson. FaG has Lars and Gunnil but no Hans Haraldson. However, found Limie Haraldsen 1838-1867 - a good candidate - Fag# 62627905. If so, Hans died at age 28, shortly after his wife Maren.
Next time I am down that way, will check to see if I can make out "Hans" on the stone.
As always, thanks a million for good leads.

I think I see Hans on there, but so much lichen on the stone very hard to say.

Wow - good finds. I think we got our man.
Wondering why Hans was not buried with his wife Maren at Holden since he died soon after.
Minn. Cemetery Inscriptions shows burial near Lars Hanson 1825-1896 and Gunnil Hanson 1817-1886 at Wanamingo - so maybe some connection there.

Hans' mother is Maren Hansdtr so perhaps Lars or Gunhild are relatives of hers?
Since they were married only so briefly, maybe her family being members of Holden offered a spot for her in "their" cemetery. Hans dying so shortly afterwards, care for his services probably fell to his own connections rather than his wife's family.
The daughter Maren married 1st to Nils Otterholt and when he died in 1902 the newspaper said that Nils had died at the home of his father-in-law H.C. Westermo, an uncle I'm guessing, mor bror to Maren? |

Appreciate your probable explanation about burial for Hans Limie. Seems like that early burials did not have a "family plot." Family members just buried wherever there was space.
Hans Christensen Westermo 1838-1906 was actually older brother to Maren Thorine Westermo Limie, but she was adopted by Hans and his wife Karen Sortedal. So you have correct assumption that Hans was a brother to her mother Maren Limie - although some trees list Hans as her father. Not surprisingly -none of the trees on Ancestry have correct information. Perhaps when MarenThorine Limie died1866, Hans and Karen Westermo "adopted" her orphaned daughter Maren Hansine, born 1866.
Trying to find this "family" on the 1880 census, but no luck yet - Hans, Karen, and Maren Hansine.

Nils Olson Otterholt married Maren Hansine Hansdtr Limie in Nov 1883- Nils birth listed as 4 March 1862 Sugar Creek, Wis. But I wonder if maybe he was born in Norway instead.
When Nils died 1902, some records show Nils' father as Jacob O Otterholt, But Jacob got married in 1887 in Walworth Co, Wis. Seems Jacob is more likely brother to Nils. Jacob's parents shown as Ole Jacobson Otterholt and Ellen K Danielson.
After Nils died in 1902, his widow Maren Hansine married Isaac Jacobson and they lived in Walworth Co. Wis on the 1910 census with Isaac's mother Mary G Jacobson age 77. His mother is already a widow on 1870 Sugar Creek census. Jacobson -relatives to Otterholts?
After Isaac Jacobson died in 1934, Maren came to Minneapolis where she died in Dec 1945. Her daughter Mathilda lived in Mpls. Married to Thomas Hove, later Pollock. Name on obit M. Josephine Pollock died Dec1962.

Well, there are a number of records which point to a birthplace of Wisconsin for Nels Otterholt:
1900 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9VJ-H79
Death certificate transcript: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDM8-BJV
Minnesota state 1895 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ8R-17D
I guess I was curious as to why Maren married some guy from Walworth county. But if Nils had a connection to the place she may have had a reason to know somebody else from there. I didn't realize there might be a controversy about Nils Otterholt's parentage.
So the family Isaac Jacobson appears to be from is this one from 1860: Name: Mary Jacobson Age: 26 Birth Year: abt 1834 Gender: Female Birth Place: Norway Home in 1860: Sugar Creek, Walworth, Wisconsin Post Office: Sugar Creek Dwelling Number: 535 Family Number: 534 Cannot Read, Write: Y Household Members: Name Age Jacob Jacobson 30 Mary Jacobson 26 Sophrona Jacobson 4 Laura Jacobson 6/12 Sarah Nelson 14
Then in 1870 Mary is the head of household: Name: Isaac Jacobson Age in 1870: 9 Birth Year: abt 1861 Birthplace: Wisconsin Dwelling Number: 194 Home in 1870: Sugar Creek, Walworth, Wisconsin Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Elkhorn Father of Foreign Birth: Y Mother of Foreign Birth: Y Cannot Read: Y Inferred Mother: Mary Jacobson Household Members: Name Age Mary Jacobson 37 Sophie Jacobson 14 Louisa Jacobson 10 Isaac Jacobson 9

There is a family with Oterholt for their last name in Walworth county, Wisconsin. Here is the oldest and he is buried in Sugar Creek Lutheran cemetery: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/61176254/ole-o-oterholt
In the 1880 census he is living in the household headed by a 37 year old Jacob Olson: Name: Jacob ... Oleson Age: 37 Birth Date: Abt 1843 Birthplace: Norway Home in 1880: Sugar Creek, Walworth, Wisconsin, USA House Number: 34 Dwelling Number: 174 Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) Marital status: Married Spouse's Name: E. Oleson Father's Name: Ole Oleson Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Occupation: Farmer Neighbors: Household Members: Name Age Jacob ... Oleson 37 E. Oleson 34 S. Oleson 10 Julia Oleson 7 Peter Oleson 4 Ole Oleson 67
Ancestry points out that this is the same family in the 1865 Norway census on Oterholdt in Gjerpen, Telemark: Name: Jacob Olsen Gender: Mannlig (Male) Marital Status: Ugift (Single) Age: 23 Birth Year: abt 1842 Birth Place: Gjerpen Census year: 1865 City: Gjerpen County: Telemark County Number: 08 Counting District: Oterholdt Counting District Number: 0001 Enumeration District: Foss Enumeration District Number: 005 Relation to Head: Søn (Son) House Number: 01 Household Members Age Relationship Ole Larsen 83 Ole Olsen 53 Sara Jensdatter 51 Hustru Jacob Olsen 23 Søn Lars Olsen 21 Søn Ole Olsen 19 Søn Maren Olsdatter 17 Datter Sara Olsdatter 12 Datter Karen Olsdatter 6 Datter
According to the 1900 census US, Jacob gives departure date from Norway as 1869. |

Here is a USA Wisconsin marriage between a Jacob Olson from Gjerpen and a Gunhild Marie Nielsdtr also from Gjerpen transcribed in the ELCA marriages database. The notes on the actual marriage record say "Sugar Creek'
Name: Jacob Olsen Gender: Male Record Type: Marriage Birth Place: Gjerpen Marriage Date: 31 May 1861 Marriage Place: Dane, Wisconsin, USA Father: Ole Jacobs Mother: Elen Karine Danielsdr Spouse: Gunhild Marie Nielsen Church Name: Spring Prairie Lutheran Church Church Location: DeForest, Wisconsin
This Jacob is born 4 Sept 1831 #156: SAKO, Gjerpen kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0006: Parish register (official) no. 6, 1829-1834, p. 37 Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051011010606

This Jacob leaves with his father Ole to America in 1859 #15-16. Farm name associated Berberg and Skilbred: SAKO, Gjerpen kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0008b: Parish register (official) no. 8B, 1857-1871, p. 378 Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20051011011206
In the Sugar Creek cemetery there is an FAG memorial for Gunhilda Marie Olson: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/61176237/gunhilda-maria-olson
She is, I suspect, the first wife of Jacob Olson Otterholt. Her death in 1886 leaves him free to marry again in 1887.
Here is their family in 1870 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MNS8-CW5 There is only one child aged 8 in the household a boy named Ole b Wisconsin. I think this is Nils Olaus Olson Otterholt, going by his middle name. ( His full name is rendered in the church record of his marriage as Nils Olaus Olson Otterholdt and his father as Jacob Olsen and mother as Gunhild Maria Jensdatter, birth place as Sugar Creek, Walworth county, Wis date 4 Mar 1862. In the same record Maren Hansine's birth date as 21/866 baptism as 21 /10 66 and confirmation date 4/6 82 and her parents as Hans Haraldson L[ihme] and Maren Thorine Christensdtr and the two witnesses as Jacob Olson Otterholdt and Hans C Westermo, service at Holden.) (Nils is also mentioned as Nils Olaus Otterholdt in the jordfaestede section of Holden lutheran church records.)
For whatever reason, Jacob Olson and his family started using Otterholt. It might be that the farms in Gjerpen named Berberg and Skilbred have some relationship to Oterholdt. Or that Jacob Olson purchased land from the Oterholt family in Walworth county which might have been known as Oterholt farm after them and Jacob followed the Norwegian practice of adopting his new address name appendage. Otherwise, why family members used Otterholt as a surname is another mystery.
Probably Jacob Olson FAG: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/61176250/jacob-n-olson

Incredible amount of information to digest. A lot of Holden Minn. families came first to Sugar Creek in the '40s and '50s. Then later migrated to Goodhue Co Minn. Logical that there were still connections between the two places into the '60s and later.
Nils Olson Otterholt -if his father was Jacob Olson, I was thinking Nils would be Jacobson . But 1870 Census shows the family called by Olson already. Never would have figured that Ole age 8 could be our Nils. Good deduction!
Since Jacob Olson marriage in 1887 was his 2nd - then he would be the old enough to be the father of Nils Otterholt, as the records indicate. Thanks for clearing up another mystery.
Summary - 1859 - Emigration of Jakob Olson b. 1831 and his father Ole Jakobsen 1806. 1861 - Jakob 1st marriage to Gunhild in Wis. 1862 Nils (Ole) born followed by Christina, Mary, Caroline etc. 1883 - Nils Otterholt marriage to Maren Limie in Minn. 1886 - Jakob's 1st wife Gunhild dies. 1887 - Jakob 2nd marriage to Maren Nilsen. 1902 - Nils Otterholt dies By 1910 - Nils' widow Maren Limie married to Isaac Jacobson & living in Sugar Creek Wi 1934- Isaac Jacobson died 1945 - Maren has moved to Mpls where she dies
Jacob N Olson 1832-1914 - FaG #61176250 Sugar Creek - if this is our Jacob, then maybe 2nd wife Mary Olson 1857-1934 # 61176242. Markers look the same.
Tusen takk! Kay

Sophie might be a younger sister, too. Not sure about the mother's name, based on Gunhild being Neiler, the 55 years old should be Gunhild, too. Check out the 1880 on this family, all parents are living with them then, too. |
