I am seeking info on Gustave Adolf GABRIELSEN who, according to family stories, was a sea captain. He married Gurine Mathilde OLESDATTER in 1871 in Kristiansand, Vest-Agder. They had 4 children. In 1886, Gurine and the children left their home in Oddernes and emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia via Liverpool, England. They eventually settled in Harvard, Massachusetts. Supposedly, Gustave was already in Canada by the time they emigrated. I have been unable to find any record of Gustave leaving Norway. Any information on Gustave would be greatly appreciated.

From emigration record for Gurine and the children Kristiansand, 1886 Aug. 28: Gurine Gabrielsen 1842 Martin Gabrielsen 1875 Ole Gabrielsen 1881 Gustav Gabrielsen 1883 Bergithe Gabrielsen 1885
I didn't find neither Gurine nor Gustav in the 1865 census. Church records will be the next place to search information on this family.

Gustave Adolf Gabrielsen was my great grandfather. I have his Norwegian sea chest which still has Norwegian newspapers pasted to the inside. Gustave ranaway from Norway at the age of 17. The family, Gurine and 4 children later joined him in Nova Scotia. My grandmother was Margeurite Birgette (Gabrielsen) Bulger. |

You should check on your info here - I doubt that he had fostered 4 children before he was 17 years old.
He would earliest have left Norway after fostering his child who was born in 1884, that would be at an approx. age of 36 years.

Gustav may not have run away from Norway at 17 but it is possible that he first went to sea as a teenager. My great-grandfather and all his brothers did exactly that.
The 1875 just above lists him as house carpenter? |
