Osmund Tveito Tollefson (b. 19 July 1844 in Vinje Telemark Norway). I'd like to find records of when he left Norway, ship manifest, and when he came to America. It's possible he emigrated in 1861 and his daughter thought he was on the ship William Tell. I don't see this ship, but there is a Wilhelm Tell.

His confirmation record shows he was still in Norway on 8 July 1860 (https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1422/9311/64 line 2) and I believe he was in America in the 1865 US Census.

A family story is that someone in America paid him to take their place fighting in the US Civil War. Was this a common reason to emigrate to America? I haven't been able to find a record that he fought in that war, but his name is misspelled a lot in historical records.

Thank you!

I found the outbound record: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1422/419 He is listed on line 205 and his sister, Margit, on line 206. I believe the date is 16 May 1861, but that date is before his Confirmation date.

Neither of your links work. There are a couple of ways to get the actual page link for images but what's in your browser window is not it.

Fixed. It automatically added the comma and period to the link.

There was NO US federal census in 1865. But some states/territories did take their own census in 1865 - Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

Sorry, your right. He's in the Minnesota Census, not the US.

Ship Wilhelm Tell makes sense. Here is a clipping from a Christiania newspaper on June 1 1861. It says that Brig Wilhelm Tell lies ready to sail with ca. 120 emigrants on board, and that it will pick up 50 more passengers in Langesund. Travelling from Vinje, Langesund might be a convenient place to board.

June 1 matches well with the churchbook entry of May 21 for leaving the parish in Vinje.

The date is May 21, not May 16.
