They are found baptizing two sons in Loiten also, John in 1850 and Mikkel in 1852, but no Martin.

The family is listed in volume 1 of Løten bygdebook. No son Martin there, either. First page. Second page. Chances are this is the wrong couple.

Is Martin's last name of Moen something that is added on when he arrived? Is Moen not his name but a signifier of where he is from? I guess I don't understand how that worked.

Based on the information from his death record his father was named Ole Johnson (Johnsen) who lived at or had some relationship with the farm named Moen. So Martin could have used the name Martin Olsen Moen. The farm name is used as something of an address. It could mean the farm the person lived at. Or even worked at.There are even times when the farm name indicates a farm the person or family had a relationship with even if it is some years in the past.

A person can be referred to as Ole Johnsen Moen or Ole Johnsen or even Ole Moen.

He may even be referred to with a few different farm names if he moved during his lifetime.

Thanks Jackie, the reason for asking is that the 1920 Census for Martin O Moen of Everett, Snohomish, Washington gives an arrival year of 1889.

Here is a candidate from 1889. Martin Olsen born about 1854 leaving in 1889. Unmarried seaman whose residence is "Am. f. St."?

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000272043

Maybe his arrival. A little long for this trip.

Thank you for that clarification. Helps me understand why so many different names are being considered.

There might be more than one Martin Olsen in Alaska...

This snippet from the Alaska daily Empire Friday, Jun 02, 1916 (Juneau, AK) Page: 6, article titled "Massaxhusetts Relatives Seeking Martin Olsen" The gist of the article is that a man named G.H. Hangerud living at 169 Beacon Hill Ave, Lynn Mass. wrote to the Postmaster J.C. Hendee of Thane about the current whereabouts of Martin Olsen who was supposed to have been at Thane. His old mum last heard from him last year and was worried about him. Martin worked for some machinery company in Seattle but last known address was Thane.
