Another Martin Olson in Alaska was a "shaker & mover." He married a Mrs. Tillie Anderson about 1899 at Douglas. He ran a liquor establishment called the Board of Trade Saloon. He was also a councilman. In the 23 Aug 1905 Douglas Island News paper, it was mentioned that Martin Olson, his wife and their two elder sons Martin and Francis were planning a trip to Iowa to visit relatives in Dubuque county, Iowa to last 3 months. Sorry no relative names were given.

This Martin is Swedish:

"Amalie" is mentioned as possibly being married to Martin (Mertin). When they left for the US they had two children age 4 and 19. Amalie was just 23 making her 13 when her oldest was born. Martin would have been 16 at that time.

What was the "legal" age for a female to marry?

At what age did young people begin to practice night courting?

Those two children next to Martin Olsen and Amalie Jensen are named Johan Hansen (age 4) and Agnes Nilsen (age 10). They may or may not be children of Martin or Amalie.

If they were children of Martin, the general expectation would be that their surname might be a patronymic, Martinson /Martinsdatter or maybe Olsen or Olsdatter. The transcription records no relationship just their positions in the listing.

They might be children of Amalie Jensen with different partners. Agnes' age puts that possibility at the far edge, not impossible just not too likely. Johan would be more likely.

That lists Martin's DoD as 1924. We have the Death Certificate so we know he died 20 years later. Hum-m-m-m-m.........Zippy is so confused. Just when I think I have gotten closer I come across more conflicting information. I'm far out of my depth I'm afraid.

Interesting, the young brother age 4 named Martin appears to have gone to US in 1889:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000024086

The family minus Martin in 1875:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052079002330

Martin is working out on a Bakken farm in 1875 goat boy? The head of the household is John Mikkelson, wonder if he might be an uncle to Martin?
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052079002424

#21 born 14 ( or 19?) Feb 1863
SAH, Tolga prestekontor, SAH/PREST-062/K/L0006Parish register (official) no. 6, 1852-1876, p. 60
Quick link: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070129640064

A Martin O Moen files his declaration of intention in Barron county Wisconsin in 1902:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G93H-11XY?i=125&cc=2046887&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A86N2-JD3Z

A Martin O Moen checking into the Multnomah county Poor Farm:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS7K-Y6M5?cc=2759503&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AW9K8-2VZM

The poor farm file mentions he has a sister named Emma Hanson in Dunsmuir California. There is a family tree with lots of California connections and an Emma Olson who married an Ole Hanson. This is their family in 1900 census in Barron county Wisconsin (the same county as the Declaration of Intention is filed)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMVY-SXQ

The poor farm file also gives Martin O Moen's occupation as painter, he's widowed and age 78 (so roughly) born abt 1853 and his father is Ole Moen and mother Christine Bakon.

Here's a link to the tree:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/LDWL-R4L

This Martin Olson Moen had a criminal record in Norway for tyveri theft:
RA, Botsfengslet, D/Db/Dbb/L0024: 58h - 354h, 1886-1888, s. 119
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/db10101603290123

The criminal file says the brother John and sister Ingeborg Kristine are both in America. And there is a picture of him #2445:
