I am writing an article about a family from Sand, Suldal, Rogaland, Norway, who emigrated in 1881 and two years later, settled in Republic County, Kansas. They used the surname Mickelson in the USA. In Norway they were known as:
Tarald "Terral" Mikkelsen Østabø (name of their farm in Sand, but they did not use this name in the USA) (1842-1915)
Margreta Torgersdotter Fattland (name of farm where she was born) (1838-1923)
Martha Taraldsdotter Østabø (1867-1951), married in 1887 to Lars A. Melby, lived in Scandia
Margaret Taraldsdotter Østabø (1872-1966)
Mina "Minnie" Taraldsdotter Østabø (1875-1949)
Thea Johanna Taraldsdotter Østabø (1877-1944)
Taletta Margrete Taraldsdotter Østabø (1880-1971)

A post by jwiborg in 2010 http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4838 indicates that there are histories of Republic, Cloud and Jewell counties, but I have not been able to turn up any relevant titles. If Jan Peter or someone else knows these titles and can provide refernces, I would be very grateful!

From the US censuses for 1900 and 1910, it looks like this family lived in community with a good many Swedish immigrants, but I see no other Norwegian families in their vacinity. There were, however, Norwegian communities (like the hamlet Norway) nearby. Daughter Thea Johanna Mickelson married a Swede, John Höglund (Hoaglund or Hoagland in USA), but they met in Colorado.

Several Mickelsons are buried in Jewell County. Here is a link to Tarald's monument, with further links to family members https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/42275791/terral-mikkelson

The family farm in Beaver, Republic, Kansas was sold many years ago, and the many descendants are now mostly living in other states.

If necessary, I can provide further references in Norwegian sources. It is their story in Kansas that I am trying to put together!

Thanks for any help!

Oh, dear, I see my post has redone the Norwegian letter for "oe" in the farm name Oestaboe. Some family members used Ostebee in the USA.

From the book: History of the Norwegian people in America
Olaf Morgan Norlie (1925)

Newspaper: Decorah-posten, Friday 05 June 1925
The article is likely based on the book
Nordmændene i Amerika : deres Historie og Rekord : Bidrag til og Bindeled mellem Norges Historie og Nord-Amerika - De Forenede Staters i Særdeleshed. 1:1-2
Martin Ulvestad (1907)
