My grandfather's family, back to the 1700s, all farm people from the same local area: the island Radøy and the adjoining Lindås peninsula. Then in the 1700s a woman, daughter of a captain in the Danish army, marries one of these farmers. Her family are all aristocracy, including people in the Lillienskjold family. My question: is this believable? Source is the genealogy site Geneanet. I ran into another case, in my grandmother's family, where some relatives were claiming to find connections to wealthy landowning families in the Hardanger Fjord area. That one definitely did not pan out. Is an aristocrat going to seek life on a 40-acre farm with 10 cows, 20 sheep, oats and potatoes? |

Does the Geneanet profile have any sources attached to the family?
There are Bygdebøker for both Lindås and Radøy so there should be enough information to either prove or disprove the thesis. |

Was this captain by any chance the son in law of Bergen's female slave trader Else Hansdatter Montagne/Lillienskjold? This geni profile contains a long text taken from an old article in Bergens Tidende. Note what is written towards the end. Being a subscriber to Bergens Tidende, I was able to find the original article, and noted that it was (at least partly) based on an interview with Yngve Nedrebø, state archivar in Bergen. It is hard to think of anyone more reliable in such matters than him. |

ToreL that is correct. My alleged ancestor was infantry captain Casper von Brunneck (various spellings), son-in-law of Else Maria Hansdatter Smidt Lillienskjold. Thanks for this source.
AntonH I have obtained and laboriously translated the bygdebok for Alenfit, which covers the western part of Lindas peninsula. Unfortunately the bygdebok for Radøy seems only to be available - here in USA - at North Dakota State University library, which does not lend such material. So, I may need to make a trip from Oregon to scenic North Dakota. |

I had a quick look in Volume 1 of Radøy gjennom tidene. Captain Brueneck's granddaughter Karen Dorte Jacobsctr. Landsvik is mentioned on page 243. It is said that despite her lineage, the locals would witness that she belonged to the peasant class and was quite poor.
The upper class tended to have more children than others, and eventually there wasn't room for them all on the peak of society. Karen Dorte was daughter of Casper's daughter Elisabet Catharina, who had married a local lieutenant. |

Jackie is quite correct the University is UND.
Before the Pandemic UND Librarian Michael Swanson did some searching of Bygdebøker for me for a very nominal fee.
You could send him an email at "Swanson, Michael" <michael.l.swanson@und.edu> and see if he can scan any relevant pages for you.
