According to a Family Tree on Ancestry.com this is Henrik Olsen born about 1797 with his family in the 1801 Census. The family is back in Aurskog for this Census.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058220001456

We are getting far enough back in time that you probably need to see if there is a Bygdebok that covers this family and this farm before I would conclude that the Tree is correct.

Wow, I think I need to write all of this down! The only info I have had is a new paper clipping which told me who his brothers and sisters were, I may a little stupid in asking this but how did the name Klemesrud come about? Is it from Klemmestrude, I don’t understand that element of it all, I live in the UK, my father lives in the US and he doesn’t know much either, did they own a farm named Klemmestrude, I’m really sorry if I sound stupid, I don’t get the connection.

Many thanks for you help so far.

Best wishes
Sam

Hi Anton,

Wow thank you, that’s amazing, yes that’s him, I was looking to see how we got the name Klemesrud, as the farm it’s associated with Sigvart (my great grandfather) only worked there, we don’t really know much outside of the US Sigvart went to the US aged 19, so although he could speak Norwegian, no one else in the family can, we also do not have much history on either side of our families descendants, your comments are most helpful thank you once again for your help

best wishes Sam

Sam Bland (is this name familiar to you?) wrote asking for information about Sigvart Olson. The entry above acknowledges that Sam thinks the Klemesrud / Klemmetsrude person found is the same person as Sigvart Olson. Klemesrud is a farm name. In Norway there is a traditional naming system which puts the farm name at the end of the given and patronymic name while the person lives on that particular farm. The naming system in US and other English speaking places is different as you inherit your father's surname. So immigrants have decisions to make how to be known in their new country.

Jackie gave you a good explanation on naming practices in Norway before the 1900's and the use of a farm name attached onto the end of the persons patronymic name. My name is a good example of what sometimes happens when a Norwegian moves to America. My grandfather was named Anton Olsen and was born on the Høgeli farm in Norway. In Norwegian parish records he was referred to as Anton Olsen or Anton Olsen Høgeli and even Anton Høgeli. When working on a neighboring farm he was referred to as Anton Olsen Skjæggedal. When he arrived in Minnesota he adopted the name Anton Hagelee an Americanized version of Høgeli. Too many Olsens here already I guess.

So your ancestor adopting the farm name of Klemesrud as a last name is not at all unusual. The spelling of the farm names can vary some, that is also not unusual. I see in the Family Search article on the Aurskog parish that the name is spelled Klemetsrud. It is probably a small farm as it is included in the list of farm names under the large farm of Mangen Nordre along with a couple of other small farms.

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Aurskog_Parish,_Akershus,_Norway_Genealogy

To the question, did he own the farm. That is difficult to tell. Maybe but probably not. More likely he was a renter of the farm. A cotter or in Norwegian a husmann.

There are a lot of Family Trees on Ancestry.com for the Klemsrud family in America. You would have to get a subscription with Ancestry to access them of course. But there are also some family trees on Family Search as well. You need to sign up for Family Search but there is no cost. Here are some links for children of Ole Hendriksen Klemsrud and Randine Hansdatter.
