I am adopted and both my adopted parents and birth parents are Norwegian. I would like to visit areas that they came from.
Wibeto and Sonstebo are my birth family names but I know nothing more than that. Are people with these names located in a specific area of Norway?
My adopted family is from Romseland Farm which is near Skjold. There is a thread about it on this website including a potential address. My plan is to write beforehand to get permission to see the farm at a convenient time for whoever is living there. Our entire family who lived on that farm, immigrated decades ago to the US. Would it be okay to contact the people on the farm now?
I appreciate any help you can give me. |

Norwegian farm names describe geographical features and such, and, as Jackie said in the other thread, they are rarely unique to any particular place.
The combination "Romseland near Skjold", however, very likely refers to the farm identified in the other thread. A particular street address (Romsalandsvegen 31) was suggested there, but that may be a little too specific. Farms tended to be split up into several smaller farms, often with the same name, and in the nineteen-fifties there were five different Romsaland (note the two "a"s) farms close to, but not all at, that particular street address. There is a Tysvær historielag (Tysvær Historical Society) which has an active discussion group about emigartion to America. Perhaps you could contact them for more information? If you have a Facebook account, you can find them at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1793579757628322
Vibeto/Wibeto is not a very common name in Norway. There is a Vipeto/Vibeto farm in Telemark (former) county, possibly everybody with this name has roots here. (But this I don't know.) Sønstebø, on the other hand, (note the Norwegian spelling) is harder to pin down to anywhere particular in Norway, but there are Sønstebøs in Telemark also.
Is there any indication that your biological and adoptive parents came from the same area in Norway? In the 1920 Norwegian census, there were two people in all of Rogaland named Sønstebø. They lived in Haugesund. And in all of the records at Digitalarkivet, there is no match for anyone ever named Vibeto/Wibeto living in Rogaland. |

Sara, it would be useful to have a little more information on where you are from and what you might know about the Sonstebo family. Any information might be helpful. With what I see on Ancestry the name Sonstebo is fairly unusual and so it might be possible to trace that family back to Norway. Here is a little of what I found and now perhaps you can tell me if these people are part of your family or if the names are familiar.

It may be of some interest that Charley Alfred Sonstebo is listed as from Codington, South Dakota. There is also a Halmer / Helmer A WIBETO from Codington South Dakota as well. Coincidence maybe but worth pursuing.

And then there is a Geni-profile for Hans Anundsen Wibeto.
Is he an ancestor for all Wibetos in South Dakota? Among those found at Find a grave there is the apparently unrelated Alfred Albin Wibeto, but according to Familysearch, he was also a son of Hans Anundsen. |

Searching for Sonstebo buried in SD at Findagrave, there is the Gjermund-dynasty, there is John K S with son Ole G S, 1896-1917, there is Peder B S, 1893-1984, and there is Charley A S, 1891-1971, with a son. The three latter were born within a few years of each other, and all lived in Wallace in 1917, when this list appeared in the newspaper. If 301 to 303 were brothers and FAG has sufficient coverage, it appears that two immigrant brothers produced all the Sonstebos in SD. |
