Hello Looking for information on Norwegian relatives. My family history says they were in Spind Farsund. Johannessen was a mail carrier. Bolette was his wife. This would have been around 1887. I know thier children were Olga, Erling, Nora, and my great grandfather, Sigwald. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

The family in 1891. Note that the husband's first name is Johannes. Johannesen is a patronymic or surname. The transcription is not perfect; Salvesdatter has become Solvesdatter. The original is available through a link up to the left. |

According to the book Spind: En bygdebok (only availbale from Norwegian IP-addresses) Johannes and his brother Gabriel (further down on the 1891 census link) together bought one half of the farm Dåreid, which by the time of the book's publication in 1966 (or possibly by the time some earlier version was written) was still owned by sons of the two brothers.
This book also mentions that the brothers were in America several times, but doesn't say exactly when. A simple search for baptsims of Johannes's and Bolette's children at Spind returns the baptsims for Elen Berdine and Olga in 1877 and 1879 while they lived at Vig, and then nothing until the baptisms of Anton, Sigvald Emil and Elen Leonora in 1886, 1887 and 1889 while they lived at Dårø. So perhaps they lived elsewhere (perhaps even in America?) when Erling and Nora, whom you mention, were born. |

Bolette in 1875. Note her sister Søverine further down on the page. Apparently the two sisters married the two brothers Johannes and Gabriel. |

Johannes' and Bolette's marriage in 1877. The original record (#8) describes the groom as a Sømand, i.e., a sailor. "Broadland (Knes)" in the transcription should probably be "Brodland (Kvaas)", which matches this baptism: #9.
In the 1875 census both he and his brother Gabriel are described as sailors. In the original (bottom) the "Johan" in front of Gabriel is striked out. The original also says both were absent at the time of the census, on their way to the West Indies. Maybe this is how they acquired the money to buy the farm. |

Thank you Tore! I knew Johannes sailed--my heritage book says he was a ships carpenter and one of the first to arrive in Havana on a US ship after the USS Maine was destroyed at the start of the Spanish American war. Apart from that, very little is known. "Daried" is also written on my great grandfather's birth certificate. From your link, is Daried a place or a name of the farm itself? I have also seen "Daaro" as a spelling. Are they synonymous? I was hanging a painting my great grandfather did of the family farm in Norway yesterday, which prompted the post. |

The current name of the farm is Dåreid. Such a name would immediately loose the little ring over the a at arrival in America, but are you sure that the spelling you have seen is Daried and not Dareid? As you have noted, the old sources also frequently refer to the farm as Dårø/Daarø and such. The book mentioned above also lists the old spellings Dorø, Daarøen and Dorøen. |

Ancestry also links to this Family Tree on a site called Geneanet. I believe that Geneanet is a free site but that one needs to sign up for it to use itl Might be worth checking out since this tree seems to have quite a large collection of your ancestorsl The accuracy of the site would need to be checked out but it does give you a template of the family

I now realize that the Nora you mention in the original post must be identical to the Elen Leonora whose baptism appears in the search I linked to.
To support this, consider Johannes' newspaper death announcement, signed by Nora and Torsten Ekeland towards the bottom. And indeed Tosten Ekeland he was married to Elen Leonora in 1913. |

There are also about 25 Family Trees on Ancestry.com however a word of caution about 2/3 of them seem to go off the rails with the wrong parents of Johannes. Makes for quite a mess Here is likely the correct baptism of Johannes;
Johannes Andersen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Name Johannes Andersen Gender Male Birth Date 29. apr 1850 (29 Apr 1850) Baptism Date 12. mai 1850 (12 May 1850) Baptism Place , Kvaas, Vest-Agder, Norway Father Andreas Johannessen Mother Olea Olsdr FHL Film Number 311265
Original record is Nr 9
