I found a prison record on Erik Halvorsen Braenden from the Oslo, Akershus Prison. It was a travel permit for Erik to leave the prison and emigrate to America. Departure date was Sept. 16, 1881 going to Glencoe, MN. I did find him here after his immigration. What I wonder is, is there anyway to find out the reason for his imprisonment? Thanks for considering.....Vicky King in Minnesota |

If the record in the emigrant database is correct, he would have been just 10 years old in 1861. If I understand the 1861 ruling correctly, the felony (or part og it) was to have cleared and built a farm on other people's land without permission. |

Okay the Erik Halvorsen Gigstadeie linked to first was born in nordre Aurdal to parents Haldor Halvorsen Gigstadeie and wife Marit Olsdatter on 12 March 1850. He was confirmed on 2 July 1865 and his "character" was recorded as meget god, very good.
He was adjudicated for tyveri theft and then on 28 October 1871 put into prison for 5 months 10 days. The right page shows Erik's monthly calendar and the paragraph starts off with the information that Erik's parents have gone to America with 3 other of their children including a 16 year old son. Haldor is working as a tommerhugger, which means, I think, as a lumberjack in US.
Erik was later in trouble for simple theft again on 29 Nov 1875 and on 6 Dec 1875 given 20 days on bread and water, again in trouble for theft 16 Aug 1877
So a lot of recidivism! |

Untypical behavior for an 11 year old, so likely a different Erik. |

My Erik indeed was born March 12, 1850. Parents Halvor & Marit came to America in 1870 (into Quebec) with twins Guri and Anne and daughters Marit and Marie. I have that ship passenger entry. In 1871, Erik would have been 21. Brother Haldor Halvorsen Gigstadeie is in the Nord-Aurdal church book leaving the parish for America in April 1866. Would Erik have gotten into trouble again after 1877 due to his travel permit to come to America dated 9/16/1881? |

You said he was in prison at Akershus when he got a travel permit to leave for America. The last two infractions didn't have sentence times associated with them but you might expect if he were to re-offend that he might be given longer sentences/ infraction. |

Yes Jackie, That is what I was thinking. He was quite a re-offender. His emigration/immigration came from Digitalarkivet Emigranter over Kristiana 1871-1930. Thanks for thinking of the link of the Hillsboro Banner. I do have that. Halvor is still somewhat unsettled yet with his death.
