I am trying to locate Lyng Island. My greatgrandfather's family left this island to come to America and I have been told that when the oldest son leaves home it is customary to take the name of his home. My mother's maiden name is Lyng. I have looked on many maps and have not found it. Maybe it has changed it's name. Any help would be appreciated. Kimberley L. M. Rider at klmrider@hotmail.com

I can't find any norwegian Island named Lyng. Anyway, it's more likely that people took the name of their home farm as they emigrated. and there are some Lyng farms. You will find Lyng farms in the parishes of Inderøy, Værdal, Holtålen and Leksvik in Nord Trøndelag fylke.
However there is a farm named Lyngø (Lyng Island) in Bjarkøy parish in Troms fylke.
If you could provide us with some names and/or time frames it should be easy to check out if your ancestors lived at any of these farms before they emigrated.

I've found 72 persons named Lyng in the emigration lists for Trondheim, which would be the most likely port to use for emigrants from Nord-Trøndelag and Troms.
I would think the chances of finding your Lyng amongst these are fair.
