I am new to this site, so here goes. Is there anyway to find out what ship my ancestors took to the US in 1884? I have been searching in the Digitalarkivet website, Emigrants from Stavanger 1825-1970 and have found them there. Lars Tobiassen (Asko with slash thru it)Aska, b. Aug. 12, 1864 on Mosteroy Island. Antonette Tobiasdatter Aska, b. Jan 12, 1862. More questions here... 1. why are there multiple entries (numbers) for them on the lists? Lars has 3, each with a different Number and Antonette has 5 with different Numbers. 2. Is is possible to find out what the "remarks" are? 3. Looks like their parents, Tobias Olsen Aska & Esther Larsdatter were departing with Antonette in 1884, but then they are shown as departing with Ole Tobiassen Aske (another son) in 1890.
I hope you can help me sort some of this out. I don't read/speak Norwegian, so that doesn't help. Thank you in advance. Rhonda

First, let me say - there is no easy way to find the name of the ship. You will have to search for them in passenger lists for US and Canadian arrivals in the 2-3 weeks after the estimated departure from Norway.
1. I am not sure, but the material in that database is compiled from a multitude of sources. It is not an official list of emigrants from Stavanger as those of the police registers from the other cities. The Stavanger records was destroyed by a fire, and volunteers have collected emigration information from different sources. I think maybe you will find a person listed several times if he was found in more than one source. Or it might just be a database error. Look at the reference.
2. I am not sure about the remarks in that database, it seams to be just number so maybe it is a reference to some kind of source. I think you will get a better answer by asking the same question on the Digitalarkivet forum.
3. Maybe they came back to help their relatives getting over? |

Sorry about that post error...just learning. Just wanted to thank you for your reply. I would like to post a query in the Digitalarkivet website, but haven't found an "English" way to do it or an "English" way to read them. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi You can post in English at the Digitalarkivet, Most Norwegians can read and write it so any replies should be in English. To read the Norwegian posts you'll have to get a Norwegian/English Dictionary At the site, displayed in English, click on the Debate Forums link at the side of the page. At the next page click on the 2nd form link (it displays in blue on my screen) When you get to the forum you should see a link at the top that says "Enter New Topic". When you click on that you can enter your information. Most of it is pretty clear. The Stikkord line is for you to write a slogan or description, which will become used in the search option. Good Luck Carla |
