Thanks for the memories Borge and all the responders and original posters who make this site what it is.

It's been an absolute blast! I wish we could go on forever, or at least tomorrow. So much information sharing, and there was always a new mission, exciting and delectable. It will be hard to not take a look every day to see what's going on...

This has been the first website I open every day for years now. I'm really going to miss everyone.

I've sent newbies here countless times and I need to make copies of some of the articles that I share with them most. I'll try to add and give proper citation and credit for those articles.

I hope some solution can be arrived at to save the data! When will the site be closed down? Is there any way we can stay in touch?

I will try to see if there are any interested parties in the State Archives (Digitalarkivet), Utvandrarmuseet, maybe others. But this will take time. I will probably start by contacting Hamar State Archives and some genealogists that work with them. I have heard that the State Archives system is now going in big time for digitalization of materials, and sacrificing their opening hours to two days a week. In view of this policy, they should really be interested in all the material you all have collected!!!! But who knows? And the ability you all have to figure out what people are looking for and where to find it should also be invaluable. Many of us who use the archives in Hamar, for example, have been so dismayed that we can now only go there physically for help two days a week, since the problem is often that you don´t really know what you are looking for and where it might be hidden. So their guidance has been invaluable. And you can´t call anybody, of course, since they have put a system in place that makes it impossible to reach someone who might help you on the phone. I have managed to get an e-mail address or two through the years, but it makes me uncomfortable to bother them, since their system is so discouraging of contact. A real void may be developing in this respect, as I have heard that several resource persons in that system do not want to spend days scanning stuff and feel this is poor use of their knowledge and skills. So you all could certainly play an important role in that area! Utvandrarmuseet should be interested, but they have limited resources, and they are also very slow at adressering suggestions, but in principle they seem positive to developing their website, etc., so people can get perspectives on emigration and find emigrants. So your site would be a great boon for their resources.

Would it be a good idea to use the «tip us» option at Norwegian newspapers and get them interested in interviewing some of you all? This might help create an awareness of the value of the work you do!

Thanks for all the positive feedback and suggestions!

I was quite surprised to learn how much the site means to you all. I must say it caught me a little by surprise. I was thinking most people were moving to social media and to sites like Ancestry and Myheritage. I now feel obliged to give it a second chance and see if something more can be done to secure the continuation. I will postpone closing the site down for some months to see what might happen.

I’ll be straight about the possibilities of handing the material over to any of the institutions mentioned. I do not see that happening. There are several reasons for that.

If I have to close the site it will still be with the intention of getting it back up again in the future.

Børge

Thanks, Børge! Your site and project has some unique resources that we cannot find anywhere else. This will give us more time to try and find a way to save the site!

Hello Børge,
I wonder if you have gotten the message I sent to the e-mail address on this website. You have probably heard the old saying that folks from Hedmark are quick to react - they just have to thoroughly think through the issue first. But in this case, Hedmarkinger have gone into action mode regarding norwayheritage.com and things are moving along, despite the lockdown in place for the next 2 weeks. So I hope to hear from you regarding what I e-mailed you!

Hello Borge, this is the first time I've been back to this site since 2009. Back then you gave me valuable leads into my Norwegian family. I'm saddened to hear that it will close. The reason I came back was because I wanted to trace my grandfathers movements to the USA, never expecting to read that you were contemplating on closing because of it being built on unsupported software. I hope you find a solution as it will be a terrible loss to all us that value what this site has to offer.

Regards Erik Jensen

I'm so sorry to hear that the site will be closed down! This is where I got my first help in finding my Norweign ancestors. I appreciate all the help that was given me. I haven't visited for a while but am truly sorry to see the site disappear. It would be wonderful if you would be able to get the resources to either keep going or come back in the very near future.
Thanks for all the work that you have done and know that you are truly wished every blessing.

Hello Børge,

It's good to see that the website is still currently running.
I've actually been meaning to reach out earlier, as I may have a potential solution.

I am a Wisconsinite of Norwegian descent, with ancestors from Rogaland, Norway (primarily "Lyse").
However, I am also a Web Developer & Programmer, who works as a System Administrator by day.

I was thinking that perhaps, I might be able to assist you in migrating the Website from ASP to ASP.NET (or some other architecture), if you're interested in keeping it running.

Please, feel free to reach out to me, if you're interested.
I will PM you my contact Info/Details.

Thank You,
Matt Pedersen
