Some times the hardest names we have to figure out come from the Passengers Lists. Here are the arrivals of Sivert Brustad and Anna Brustad.
Anna Rustar in the New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 Name: Anna Rustar Arrival Date: 20 Sep 1892 Birth Date: abt 1839 Age: 53 Gender: Female Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian Port of Departure: Kristiania, Norway Port of Arrival: New York, New York Ship Name: Norge

Anton is so right about the legibility of passenger lists, they are a difficult read and interpretation. I wouldn't have searched for Rustar as a spelling of their name. But the original is clearly written as beginning with R rather than B. I would dispute the interpretation of the last letter as r even though in cursive it can be rendered in at least two ways. The last letter is taller more reminiscent of a d than an r.
jkmarler, Thank you so much! If I had come across this on my own, I would never have thought or known for sure this was actually them! I would love to know why the family did not all come together? Thanks again! Nancy |

The emigration record from Norway indicates that she is not married. She is referred to as a Pige ie unmarried girl. She is probably traveling alone as the passenger listed before her a Jens Hofsagen and Jon Boyd do not seem to have any connection with her.
She likely arrived on the ship named Ontario. I found what is likely Jens Hofsagen on that ship but the manifest is very hard to read.
This is likely Jens Hofsagen as best as I can guess
Jens Bofiagen in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Name: Jens Bofiagen Gender: Male Arrival Age: 32 Birth Year: abt 1849 Departure Port: Belfast, Ireland; Liverpool, England Arrival Date: 25 May 1881 Arrival Port: Quebec, Quebec, Canada Vessel: Ontario

lyndal40, Yes it is very interesting...especially since she used it when she left Trondheim in 1881 and when her daughter, my great grandmother Ethel Edwina Johnson, got married in 1905! I don't it and since I started this journey not even knowing her name, the marriage certificate of Ethel Johnson was the first document I found so I went about my search starting there and so I kept looking for Gurin, Gurina, and Gurine Berg. I am wondered if it was a marriage name but did not find any documentation for it. I have not found a marriage certificate for Gurine and Edward Johnson either. I have read they married in Norway then went to America. I did not see that she came with anyone but alone and no notes on how it was paid for. I also have wondered, since I have not found a lot for her that her name might not be right. I have thought it at times has been Gurine J Brustad, but not sure and do not know where she was born, and I guess the J might be Jonsdatter? I will continue to search for my Mom and I truly appreciate all the information that you all have provided for me and will continue to as I go along... Nancy

Documents I see say under the vessel it says 'dampskib tasso' what does that mean? I know it is a vessel but what does it mean and why is the name of the vessel not written instead? Nancy

The name of the ship is the Tasso
Dampskib or Dampskip is the Norwegian version of Steam Ship
Thus the Document says the vessel was the Steam Ship Tasso. At that time the Steam Ships also had sails.

The emigration record for Gurine Beg lists her as leaving on the Tasso and also lists the Dominion Line. So she travelled on the Tasso to Liverpool England and then boarded the Ontario a Dominon Line ship to Quebec Canda.
No picture for the Ontario
