On my ancestors census it lists he was in Scheen (Skien), sokn-Gielde Gade, Gard No. 237. Is there any way from this information to figure out the farm name? His last name is Watner and there are farms named Watten, Watne, Vatne and I would like to figure out where the last name originated. Digitalarkivet: 1801-telling for 0806 Scheen. [26945/26] 1535 Anders Watner Husbonde 50 1te gifte Snedker M Thanks for the help.

From what I can see from the information on the Digitalarkivet, he is not living on a farm, but in a house in the village/town of Skien. As he was a carpenter by occupation he was not an ordinary farmer, and the Watner name might actually be a family name, not a farm name in this case. In 1801 there was restrictions on who could work as craftsmen, ordinary farmers who were skilled as craftsmen were not allowed to work as such. There were also guilds. Many craftsmen came from Germany and the other Scandinavian countries to work in Norway, in many cases they kept their surnames names as family names. |

In Skien there is an old house called Watner Gaard or Watner House which was the home of Anders Watner - a well known carpenter in Skien in the first part of the 19th century. When this part of Skien - called Bakken - was developed in the 1920ies a road was named Vatner Ring after the Watner Gaard. The road still exists and possibly the Watner House as well.
As mentioned above this house was the home of Anders Watner and his family, his son Tønnes, and possibly also Tønnes' son Adolph who went to America around 1869/70 and settled down in Van Zandt County in Texas, southeast of Dallas. |

According to J.A. Schneider "Fra det gamle Skien" Vol. III (1924) Anders Tollefsen Watner came from Mandal before he settled down in Skien, probably sometime in the 1770ies. In Bjørn Slettan's book "Holum gardshstorie" (Mandal 1977) there is a reference to Vatne farm and to Tolli Tostensen (1718-1758) who lived there with his family. He had a som called Anders, born in 1751. Anders' elder brother Tosten took over the farm in 1762 and Anders probably left for Skien somewhat later where he settled down and became a well know carpenter. If this is the persons we are looking for the Wattner name originates from the Vatne farm near Mandal. The Vatne name has its roots in the old Norse word for "water". - the farm near the water - so the Wattner-name may be a real old Norwegian name even if most people with similar names called themselves Wattne, Wathne, Vathne or Vatne.. |

Tolli Tostesen Vatne (1718-1758) was a cousin of my ggggg-grandfather, so I have him in my records Tolli Tostensen Tolli's nephew Tønnes Olsen Vatne became a merchant in Mandal. The Wattne family was a leading family in Mandal for generations. One descendant was the famous painter Olaf (Oluf) Isaachsen, b. 1835. |
