Torkild Aavaldsen aka "charles furgerson" was born July 1 1856, by parents carpenter Aavald Therkildsen and Aase Olette Guttormsdatter. An interesting observation about Torkilds sister Gustine Gurine Aavaldsdtr, born 18-Oct-1859:
She married seaman Klaus Edvard Ellefsen on 17-Aug-1884.

Their children:
Olga Olette
Born 13-Apr-1885, Kragerø, Telemark
Parents: Steward Edvard Klausen, born 1857 & wife Gustine Gurine Terkelsdtr, born 1859
(E.K. should be Klaus Edvard Ellefsen)

Elvira Helene
Born 10-Aug-1893
Parents: Seaman Klaus Edvard Ellefsen & wife Gustine Gurine Terkelsen, Øen

Census-1900

Census-1910

Interesting that they had a daughter Olga(!) I was wondering if she could be the one you're seeking, but...

Census-1910 for farm Solberg in Skaatø, Telemark:
Gunnar Mikalsen 1849.04.01 Drangedal Worker at logging place
Johanne Mikalsen 1857.12.16 Skaatø wife
Anthon Gunnarsen 1888.02.03 Skaatø miner
Kristian Gunnarsen 1889.09.02 Skaatø sailor at sailing ship
Ole Gunnarsen 1891.09.27 Skaatø miner
Karen Gunnarsen 1898.03.28 Skaatø daughter

- a modest statement Jan Peter, but John Martin must have been an inventive person - father millwright Charles Furgerson = sailor Therkild Aavaldsen, (July 1 1856) - parents master carpenter Aavald Therkildsen and Aase Olette Guttormsdatter.

You're asking what happened to Johan's father.... His father was Torkild Aavaldsen b.1855. The marriage certificate from 1926 calls him Charles Furgerson.

Have you looked for him in the Skåtøy/Kragerø death-records for 1882-1900?
He does not look to appear in the 1900-census. If he's not dead, could he also have emigrated to the US? Could that explain why he is called "Charles", and not Torkild in the marriage record? Maybe he changed his name to Charles Furgerson, and settled in America? And could the daughters Olga and Ann Marie (or Marita Lousia?) have been born in the US? What are your sources for their existence?
