My gr-gr grandfather was Johannes Olsen Haugen born 19 August 1865 in Eiker. His wife, Bergit Braaten, was born 29 October 1863 in Hallingdal. They immigrated to the US landing at Ellis Island on 31 August 1893 on the Hekla from Copenhagen. Prior to immigrating, they had two children, Olga, born on 1 November 1889, and Margit, born on 08 June 1891. They appear to have been living in Eiker prior to their departure. Bergit had a brother Iver Olsen born around 1865 who also immigrated to the US about the same time.

I have attempted to find more information on the families of Johannes and Bergit in Norway, but have unable to find anything more. Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

A bible in the possession of Iver's dated 1871 lists a name of Kari Petr. Engebreteon, but I have no idea of any possible family connection.

To make it uneasy for you there are two Johannes Olsen's in their first living year in Eiker in the 1865 cencus. None of them are living on a Haugen farm and both of them in Houg (old writing for Haug) district. I'm afraid it could be any of them:

one:

For possible info on Bergit Braaten, contact the Hallinglag of America at http://www.fellesraad.com/hallinglag-home.htm
They have a lot of records of those that immigrated from there.

Hi, a bit late but hopefully good:

I took a look in the church book for Haug parish and I found:
Born 1. nov 1889 Olga Marie, her parents were Johannes Olsen (born 1864) and Birgit Olsdatter (born 1864, her brothers name would have been Olsen). They lived on a teants place under the farm Røren (just outside Hokksund).

Born 8. jun 1891 Margit Ovidia with the same parents only this time her mothers birth year is 1865 and the farm is Røren.

I am not related to this people as far as I know.

Johannes and Birgit married Oct 6 1889, see #27
Johannes father was Ole Hansen Pg-eie (= Præstegaardseie - the 1865 census then shows that Johannes mother was Maren Olsdatter.) and Birgits father was Ole Østensen Næs. (Here it is stated that she was born 1862 while in the baptismal record is stated both 1864 and 1865)
Bergit was born Sept 30 1862, see #138
her parents were Ole Østensen and Margit Iversdatter at Johannesgaard. In1865 the family was at Gudbrandsrudeie
Iver Bjørnsen (Lægdslem) is most likely Margits father.
Ole Østensen was born June 24 1831, see #246
his parents were Østen Christensen and Bigit Nilsdatter Johannesgaarden.
Margit Iversdatter was born Dec 3 1831, see #8
her parents were Iver Bjørnsen and Christi Larsdatter Eidalseie.

Ole Hansen and Maren Olsdatter married Aug 24 1860, see #36
Ole was at Haug Præstegaard and was born at Kollen.
Maren Olsdatter came from Semsmoen u. Præstegaarden.
She was confirmed Oct 17 1856 and her parents were Ole Nilsen and Trine Thorsdatter, see #15
In Marens baptismal record, see #104
is recorded that she was born out of wedlock March 30 1838 and that her father was the brother of her mothers father.

Hello Jons.

A very good friend of mine Mr. Terje Østro in Gol in Hallingdal is writing a farm and family book in the area that Bergit was born. Could you please let me/him know where she was settled down, how many kids and when she died?

Thank you.

Regards
Tormod
