Among my ancestors, Willem SMETS, ° Vechmaal (Belgium), May 2, 1873 (son of Nicolas and Maria Catharina FRANçOIS), + Custer County, Nebraska, 1924, married in Custer County, Nebraska, ca 1903, Guro OTTUN, ° Minnesota, December 31, 1883.
The parents of Guro OTTUN were born in Norway,
the father Nels J. OTTUN, in Luster, Sogn Og Fjordane, February 24, 1843, + Custer County, Nebraska, October 12, 1905, second marriage, ca 1878, Oline LOFTNESS, ° Norway, August 20, 1856, + Custer County, Nebraska, January 15, 1933; they married however after they left for the States.
Nels J. OTTUN married already a first time, ca 1861, Eloise MUNKHAUGEN, + Iowa County, Minnesota, October 21, 1877. Nels and Eloise married after they left for the States.
I'm looking for more information on these people.
Thanking in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi,
this looks to be family from the Ottum farm, in Luster, Sogn & Fjordane.

But your posting is very confusing..., what are all the dates you are refering too...? Are they birth-dates, wedding dates, emigration dates or what???

Hi,
what is your source for Nels J. Ottun's birthdate, February 24, 1843?

I've found one "Niels Johannessen" in S&F, which is born on Feb.20, 1843, but baptised on Feb. 24....

Some interesting history-reading about the emigration from Sogn & Fjordane: click here

Your family can also be found in the US 1880 census for Minnesota, I guess you've seen that...

Hi Johan,
I read your posting and I can give you lots of information! First of all, I have a question for you. Who are your parents and grandparents? I have a fairly complete geneology of all the Ottun/Loftness family, but as we get into the people in my generation and their children, there are gaps!
Nels J. Ottun and Oline Loftness Ottun were my great grandparents. Nels was born on February 24, 1843 in Norway, and died on October 12, 1905. Oline was born on August 20, 1856 in Norway, and died on January 15, 1933. Guro was their third child. She and her two older sisters, Ella and Marianna (Mary), were born in Minnesota. Their other children, Inger, Susie, Anna, Berent, and Bertha, were all born in Round Valley, a rural community in Custer County, Nebraska. Berent was my grandfather. Nels and Oline are buried in the Round Valley cemetary. Your ancestors William (James) and Guro Ottun Smets are also buried there. William died in 1924. Guro died in 1969. I remember seeing her many times at family gatherings.
